Hydraulic conductance of grapevine leaves under different radiation and water regimes
Abstract
The combined effects of radiation and water supply on leaf water potential, stomatal conductance and petiole hydraulic conductance (kpetiole) of field-grown grapevines (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Chasselas) were studied during 2013 growing season at the Agroscope Research Station in Leytron (Switzerland). Combinations of two irrigation levels (I: irrigated and NI: non- irrigated) with four radiation levels were studied in a “pergola” training system. The I vines were watered weekly with 16 L/vine from bloom to veraison while the NI vines were not irrigated during the whole season. Water infiltration from rain was avoided by covering the soil around them with a plastic film. Different radiation levels were obtained by choosing different leaf positions on the “pergola”: East, Top, West and Interior Shaded leaves which received 35.7, 61.2, 33.6 and 1.48 mol.m-2 .d-1 of photosynthetic active radiation respectively. Leaf water potential, stomatal conductance and petiole hydraulic conductance were reduced in NI vines along the season, and showed a distortion of xylem cells morphology compared to I vines. Regardless of the treatment applied, petiole hydraulic conductance decreased after midday, as vapor pressure deficit and evapotranspiration increased, and recovered again during the afternoon. Petiole hydraulic conductance of I vines was more responsive to the environmental variables (temperature and radiation) than NI vines.
