Leaf removal treatments as affecting Botrytis cinerea occurrence on Pinot gris grapes from north-eastern Italy: results over four years of trials
Abstract
Fruit-zone leaf removal is a technique applied in the vineyards aiming to improve cluster microclimate thus allowing the grapes to achieve better quality and cluster sanity. Some grape varieties, with very compacted clusters (e.g. Pinots) are known to often suffer severe incidence from grey mold (Botrytis cinerea) and/or sour rot. An experimental trial was carried out in Friuli Venezia Giulia (North-Eastern Italy) on Pinot gris throughout the years from 2007 to 2010, comparing different leaf removal machine typologies (leaf plucker; pulsed-air leaf remover) as they influence Botrytis cinerea occurrence at harvest time. The occurrence of Botrytis cinerea was high in 2010, mean in 2008 and very low in 2007 and 2009, related with meteorological season course. On the whole, both machines efficiently reduced the apparition of Botrytis cinerea, but pulsed-air leaf remover demonstrated better performances through more efficient debris removal.
