OENO One | Editor-in-chief recruitment

The International Viticulture and Enology Society (IVES) is recruiting an editor-in-chief (viticulture) for its OENO One journal

Context

OENO One is a leading international peer-reviewed journal in vine and wine sciences, published by the International Viticulture and Enology Society (IVES). The journal was created in 2016, has four editors-in-chief (two for enology and two for viticulture) and a board composed of more than 90 associate editors. Due to the retirement of Cornelis van Leeuwen, editor-in-chief viticulture, IVES is recruiting a replacement.

Position description

In collaboration with the three editors-in-chief, the candidate will undertake an initial assessment of submitted articles. The total annual submission volume of OENO One is approximately over 250 articles/year, meaning that each editor-in-chief handles approximately 70 articles/year.

After the first reading of an article, the editor-in-chief may either reject the article or forward it to a specialized associate editor within one week. The associate editors will take full responsibility for choosing reviewers and making the final decision on the article. However, the editor-in-chief must be available to support the associate editors if needed.

The editor-in-chief will use the OENO One platform to manage submissions, ensuring adherence to the journal’s editorial policy and respect for deadlines. Close collaboration with the editorial team, particularly the editorial manager, is essential.

Additionally, the editor-in-chief will participate in the OENO One Editorial Strategy Working Group (approximately four meetings per year) to discuss and propose improvements to editorial processes.

Furthermore, the editor-in-chief is responsible for promoting the journal and the association, advocating Open Access. The editor-in-chief must implement the editorial policy and ensure the renewal of the associate editors’ board according to the themes that need coverage.

The editor-in-chief will also be involved in organizing the annual meeting of associate editors and participating in the annual reporting process.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct an initial analysis of submitted articles in viticulture.
• Decide to reject or forward articles to associate editors after the first reading.
• Assign associate editors within one week of article selection.
• Support associate editors in their role, if needed.
• Ensure submission management and adherence to deadlines, guidelines and ethical rules using the OENO One
• Collaborate closely with the editorial team and the editorial manager.
• Promote the journal and the IVES association, advocating Open Access.
• Participate in the OENO One Editorial Strategy Working Group.
• Implement the editorial policy and renew the associate editors’ board as needed.
• Organize the annual meeting of associate editors with the other three editors-in-chief.
• Participate in the annual reporting process.

Requirements

• Candidates for the position are active academics/researchers in viticulture with an outstanding publication record and international visibility.
• She/he has experience with scientific editing and has preferably served as editor or associate editor for OENO One or another peer reviewed Clarivate indexed scientific journal.
• The candidate is employed by one of the adherent members of IVES. If not, she/he engages her/his institution to become an adherent member of IVES starting in 2027.
• The candidate must have enough time available for the position, be able to respect tight time limits, have a good level of English (all correspondence for OENO One is in English) and good communication skills, and be at ease with digital tools.
• She/he must have an ethical attitude towards scientific publication and avoid conflicts of interest.
• The candidate must be a good team player and strive to maintain OENO One at the highest possible standards.

Conditions

• All editors-in-chief and associate editors are volunteers, meaning that they are not paid for their duties for OENO One.
• IVES invites the editors-in-chief to the annual IVES Science Meeting and the board meetings of the journals edited by IVES and takes care of all related expenses.
• Participation of the editors-in-chief in the annual editorial board meeting is mandatory.

Selection

• The candidates will be selected by the IVES executive committee. The selected candidates will be proposed to the General Assembly for validation by vote on February 4, 2027.
• The candidate will take office after the General Assembly of 4 February 2027.
• Members of the selection committee with a conflict of interest regarding a candidate will declare the conflict and not be involved in the evaluation of that candidate.
• IVES aims at achieving gender equity and a balanced distribution of career stages and experience.
