Current developments in the sustainable control of grapevine fungal diseases

Abstract

Downy mildew, powdery mildew and grey mould occur in vineyards to varying degrees in every growing season. Grapevine trunk diseases have become more prevalent in recent years, while other diseases, such as black rot, are increasingly common. Historically, these diseases have been controlled using synthetic plant-protection products, although a growing vineyard area is now treated with less aggressive alternatives. The efficacy of both conventional and alternative products is under constant review, as the number of authorised active substances is progressively decreasing without equivalent replacements. Copper, widely used in organic production against several diseases, is one example whose use is currently restricted under Regulation (EU) 2018/1981. The EU Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive and its implementation in national legislation establish requirements for safe and sustainable plant-protection practices. In addition, the Farm to Fork Strategy within the European Green Deal aims to reduce pesticide use by at least 50 %. Legislative restrictions and concerns over soil and water contamination have therefore increased the need for alternatives to conventional fungicides. At the same time, both the wine sector and consumers are showing growing demand for organic or environmentally sustainable products. Combining synthetic fungicides with alternatives such as basic substances and biostimulants, together with appropriate cultural practices, may provide an effective strategy for disease control and the sustainability of grapevine cultivation.
