Vine irrigation: practical strategies

Abstract

The impact of climatic conditions on vineyards is increasing every year. In many regions, irrigation has become necessary to achieve stable production and consistent quality. Water is a scarce and costly resource; knowing how to manage it according to production objectives, and understanding how and to what extent irrigation affects grapevine physiology, are therefore essential for more precise use. This can be achieved without excessive complexity by observing the plant, understanding the effects of management decisions – not only irrigation – and clearly defining both the water available and the production objectives.
