Antioxidant activity of Brazilian tropical red wines in relation to its phenolic content

The purpose of this study was to analyze the antioxidant capacity of several samples of commercial wines produced in the São Francisco Valley - Northeast of Brazil to evaluate their dependence on vintage, winery and grape variety and to investigate their correlation with the total phenolic content. Wines from grape cultivars Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Syrah, Ruby Cabernet, Syrah, Tannat and Tempranillo were evaluated, in triplicate, for total phenolic content by the Folin Ciocalteu’s reagent using gallic acid as a standard and for antioxidant activity, by the 2,2–diphenyl–1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assay.
