Possible mode of action of paraffin oil as a spray agent in the control of powdery mildew of grapevine
Mineral oils (such as paraffin oil) have been used for a long time for disease control in vineyards. However the mode of action of this substance have not been studied yet. Our examinations highlighted that paraffin oils do not have a direct fungicide effect against neither the mycelia nor the conidia of Erysiphenecator, the causing agent of powdery mildew.
Early evaluation of grape berry susceptibility to Botrytis cinerea under contrasting growing conditions
Substantial economic losses occur in grapevines due to Botrytis Bunch Rot (BBR). The control of this disease is still largely based on periodic anti-Botrytis specific fungicide spraying. Therefore, protection strategies must be optimized in order to reduce pesticide applications.
Biological, natural, and chemical control of causative agents of vine decline
The fungal diseases that affect grapevine wood are very limiting factors for viticulture and difficult to control. Several pathogens are associated with these diseases, such as the fungi of the family Botryosphaeriaceae. In this context, this work aimed to verify the effect of chemical fungicides, biological agents and plant extracts on the control of fungi Botryosphaeriaceae, causal agents of death and decline of the vines.
Strategies of control of mealybugs (Planococcus ficus) in vineyard of Cafayate-Salta–adaptive research
The present work aimed to compare different control strategies for mealybugs (Planococcus ficus). The adaptive research experience was carried out in a vineyard of Tolombón, Cafayate, Salta (Argentina), in 2015/2016 period, in Cabernet Sauvignon variety, in vertical shoot.
Evaluation of three control strategies against grapevine powdery mildew in the central region of Chile
The main strategy to control powdery mildew (Erysiphe necator [Schw.] Burr.) in Chilean vineyards is largely based on periodic fungicide spraying (up to 18 applications per season), which may lead to many environmental and human health risks.
Investigating spatial heterogeneity in powdery mildew pressure at the plot scale: A precision viticulture approach
Powdery mildew (Erysiphe necator) (PM) is the most important and impacting fungal disease of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L). This disease remains difficult to model and forecast accurately because (i) the first signs of the disease in the vineyard are hardly noticeable in the first 30- 40 days after the onset of the epidemic (three to four pathogen generations), and (ii) its spatial distribution within or between neighboring plots is heterogeneous.
Investigating the spread and effect of Grapevine red blotch virus in California-grown Zinfandel
Grapevine red blotch virus (GRBV) is a major concern for California winegrape growers since its discovery in 2012. Negative impacts on juice have been reported, though inconsistent. A treehopper, Spissistilus festinus, transmitted GRBaV in strict laboratory studies, but field evidence of transmission is lacking.
Sustainable plant-parasitic nematode management: A case study from Washington wine grapes
Plant-parasitic nematodes are cosmopolitan pests of wine grapes with yield losses worldwide estimated at approximately 5 to 8%. Managing plant-parasitic nematodes in wine grapes is challenging due to limited availability of effective nematicides and rootstocks with simultaneous resistance to multiple nematode species.
Occupational trajectories and social reproduction of small and medium grape growers (Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza-Argentina)
This work analyzes the social reproduction strategies of small and medium grape growers located in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina. Small grape growers are involved in a process of continuous “displacement” that corresponds to intra-generational and inter-generational mobility. It is observed that those who were part of the rural middle classes are facing their declassification with survival strategies that allow them to continue as owners in the productive chain.
The domestic market potential of table grapes in Argentina
The table grape export business in Argentina had its boom in the last 2000s, when in 2008 it reached a little more than US $ 88,000,000. Since that time, the volume exported has been systematically reduced, which reduced the cultivated area and / or modified its destiny to wine or raisin production.
Vintage organization software INTA®
The grapes harvest in wine industry, in Cuyo, is a critical activity that each actor organizes individually. It operates on the basis of “every man for himself”, where it is not recognized a scheme with agreed and complementary actions in pursuit of common goal and interest.
Agro-ecological grape production in Mendoza province, Argentina–Technical and economic characterization
In this work agro-ecological vineyards are considered to all those who present a production scheme with low use of synthesis inputs and that tend to achieve a natural balance within the crop, regardless of their adherence to a formal certification system. It includes those that are self-declared agro ecological, organic or biodynamic.
Evolution of the area of the most important vine varieties in Argentina
Analysis of the evolution of the most cultivated vine varieties in Argentina during the period 2000-2016*. The area evolution by variety, color and aptitude in all the country and per province was analyzed. The total area under vine increased by 11%, varieties suitable for wine and / or musts increased by 9.5%, those suitable for fresh consumption had an increase by 46.5% and those suitable for raisins increased by 25.3%.
Mineral, phenolic and anthocyanin profile in flours of grape pomace: effects of diferent winemaking process
Wine industry is an important economic activity in the World, generating significant quantities of residues, mostly known as grape pomace. This material is rich in many nutrients, as fiber, minerals and antioxidants substances, such as phenolic compounds. These nutraceutical properties of grape pomace could be harnessed for human or animal consumption.
The maturation evolution of Chardonnay grapes intended to sparkling wine making in Dom Pedrito
However, the increase of sugar concentration in the grapes causes a decrease of desired organic acids which are positive for the production of sparkling wines. The aim of this study was to identify the optimal harvest period of ‘Chardonnay’ intended to sparkling wine making in Dom Pedrito, Campanha Gaúcha.
Characterization of different fractions obtained during press of rose musts in Southern Brazil
The objective of this work is to characterize the different fractions obtained, based on their malic, tartaric and total acidity. Twenty fractions of must were discriminated in order during the pressing for further physical-chemical analysis by Fourier Transform (FTIR).
Fractionation of white musts destined to prepare sparkling wines in Southern Brazil
The objective of this work was evaluate different fractions of must obtained along the vertical pressing, aiming to study important variables on quality of white wines. Thus, twenty portions of must were obtained for subsequent physico-chemical analyzes of total acidity, pH and tartaric acid by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR).
Effect of closure types and storage temperature on the oxygen levels during ageing Malbec wines (Mendoza, Argentina)
During ageing, different chemical reactions occur affecting the stability of wine. These reactions depend on the temperature, the conservation time, etc. Also, these reactions are affected by dissolved oxygen (OD) and headspace oxygen (OHS) which are related to the permeability of different closures types.
Phenolic composition of skins and pulps of grapes for traditional sparkling wines in the Northeast of Brazil
Among the compounds contributing to the grape and wine qualities, phenolics play an important role. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the phenolic compounds of skins and pulps of white and red grapes at harvest, destined to traditional sparkling wines, from two winegrowing regions producing tropical wines in the Northeast of Brazil.
Comparative evaluation of productive parameters and wine quality of Cabernet-Sauvignon selections on the Cauquenes area during 2015/2016 season
The use of clonal selections in viticulture allows having vineyards with more defined and uniform characteristics. Different clonal selections of a same cultivar can have different productive and quality based characteristics, which are dependent on environmental factors. The objective of this study was to characterize three grapevine clonal selections ENTAV-INRA (169, 191, and 337) and a massal selection of Cabernet Sauvignon, submitted to two yield range management by a cluster thinning treatment.
