Articles selection: the vine canopy management

We have selected several articles that cover essential topics for winegrowers during this key time of the year. Discover a selection of 4 articles published in IVES Technical Reviews.

Monitoring phenology — the periodic phenomenon of the vine growing cycle — using standardised characterisation methods, is crucial for winegrowers and other professionals in the field. Many vineyard management operations are carried out according to these phenological stages, such as budburst, flowering and veraison (👉 article 1).

One of the first consequences of these different stages concerns the vine’s nitrogen nutrition status, which is essential for producing high-quality grapes. Nitrogen deficiency has a direct impact on the fertility of the vines and yield, as well as affecting the aromas of the wine. This is why it is so important to monitor nitrogen nutrition status using different methods at different phenological stages (👉 article 2).

More technical approaches are intrinsically linked to these different stages, such as defoliation that systematically produced positive results in the battle against fungal diseases on the vines and on the grape composition if done before the veraison, or the first hedge trimming which can be delayed to limit lateral shoot growth, for example (👉 articles 3 & 4).
