Water recharge before budbreak and/or deficit irrigation during summer: agronomic effects on cv. Tempranillo in the D.O. Ribera del Duero

Abstract

The availability of water in the soil and the water status of the vineyard are proving to be determining factors for crop management in the current context of climatic variation. For this reason, it is very useful to know the effect that water management, before and during the vegetative cycle, has on the agronomic response of the vineyard and the quality of grapes in order to guide crop decision-making.

A study is proposed on the vegetative, productive and qualitative response of cv. Tempranillo, grafted onto 110R, during the period 2021-2023, to soil water recharge before budbreak and to deficit irrigation (30% ETo) during the summer, with three treatments: recharge and no irrigation, recharge and irrigation, no recharge and irrigation. In a vineyard located in the D.O. Ribera del Duero and trelllis trained, 4 random blocks were established, with elementary plots of 48 vines.

The observed results show a clear impact of the application of deficit irrigation in summer compared to the water recharge of the soil profile before bud break, both on vegetative growth and on productive development. The influence of the water regime on grape quality showed variable annual trends depending on the chemical parameter analysed, with greater discrimination of the treatment not irrigated during the summer. The evaluation of the observed results requires the extension and deepening of the study in different types of soil.
