The impact of vine pruning methods on physiological development and health condition of Vitis vinifera
Abstract
This project aims on monitoring the plant development and comparison of the effects of various training systems on vine fertility and physiological processes. It seeks new approaches to enable vines to adapt to the continuous evolution of climate conditions. Proper establishment and development of cordon training systems are key to ensuring the sustainability of vineyard conditions. Several options have been explored, including newly established cordon vineyards, converted old cane-trained vines, and original cane-trained vineyards.
Research objective of this project is to reflect and develop procedures for changing the conditions of vine cultivation in region of South Moravia, Czechia. One of the main purpose is to integrate the know-how of branched Guyot and Spurred Cordon pruning methods within our working practices. Main purpose is to boost durability of our vineyards using the basic manual work as a tool of improvement. Based on these outlined goals, I attended the Simonit & Sirch pruning academy to reach maximum of education about correct prunign know-how. Based on these skills and knowledge, I decided to elaborate few methodologies for Czech viticulturists, in which I applied Simonit & Sirch methodology in our vineyards of different age and life stages. These models should help to transform the vineyards into funcional and sustainable structures with well preserved vascular tissues and higher durability against weather conditions.
Materials and methods. Evaluated varieties: Pinot blanc, Riesling, Zweigeltrebe, Chardonnay, Pinot noir. Evaluated pruning styles/trainings; Guyot versus Transformed cordon. Methods: comparative analysis of analytic compunds, uvology of grapes and Ravaz index of plant vitality.
As one of the results I produced article about changes within pruning practices and adjustment of grapevine canopy structures within so-called Cool climate regions, using climate-responsive techniques of pruning and cultivation as a part of Precision viticulture.
