Holistic characterization of Sangiovese clones 

Sangiovese is one of Italy's most cultivated grape varieties, and currently, over 130 different clones are registered in the national register of grape varieties. However, despite the sangiovese genome having been re-sequenced, limited molecular and genomic information is still available for this cultivar. The present study investigates the complexity of genotype-environment interactions of ten different Sangiovese clones, cultivated in the Chianti Rufina DOCG district over five consecutive vintages (2016-2020).

Hyperspectral imaging for precision viticulture

Precision viticulture aims to optimize vineyard management by monitoring and responding to variability within vine plots. this work presents a comprehensive study on the application of hyperspectral imaging (hsi) technology for monitoring purposes in precision viticulture. authors explore the deployment of hsi sensors on various platforms including laboratory settings, terrestrial vehicles, and unmanned aerial vehicles, facilitating the collection of high-resolution data across extensive vineyard areas.

Impact assessment of the reverse osmosis technique in wine alcohol management

Wine authenticity and composition can be influenced by a range of membrane separation processes as reverse osmosis. In the context of climate change, the natural trend is to obtain wines with higher alcoholic concentration when classical winemaking methods are employed, and this may induce alteration of typicity of wines by masking the olfactory and taste properties. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of reverse osmosis techniques used for decrease of ethanol content on the stable isotopic ratios as markers for wine authenticity characteristics.

Impact of monopolar and bipolar pulsed electric fields on the quality of Tinta Roriz wines

Pulsed electric fields (pef) technology holds significant promise for the agrifood industry, considering the capacity of inducing cell electroporation, due to the disruption of cellular membranes. Pef-induced permeabilization is dependent of the chosen treatment protocol (i.e. Pulse shape, electrical field strength, specific energy) and of the matrix’s characteristics (i.e. Cell radii and size, ph, electrical conductivity).

Impact of winemaking practises on the formation of pinking

The pinking is a phenomenon that can occur in white wine produced with white grape causing the color change from yellow to red-salmon hue. Even if its appearance is highly variable and dependent to the vintage, the wines from certain grape varieties, such as Sauvignon blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Trebbiano di Lugana, have been identified to be more susceptible to the pinking.

Impact of yeast strains on wine profiles of nine PIWIs: focus on volatile thiols

Disease resistant grapevine varieties (PIWI) are increasingly important for sustainable wine production, yet the impact of different yeasts on their wine profiles remains poorly studied. In this study, nine white interspecies varieties (i.e., caladris blanc, fleurtai, hibernal, johanniter, muscaris, sauvignon kretos, soreli, souvignier gris, and voltis) grown at the faculty of agriculture, university of Zagreb (Croatia) were vinified with three different saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts (control strain, zymaflore x5, and zymaflore xarom).

Impacts of climate change on wine producer countries located north of the wine belt

Climate change poses significant challenges to the global wine sector, with cool-climate countries particularly vulnerable to its effects. The research employs a panel data analysis to investigate the impact of climate change on the wine industry in 66 countries, focusing on 11 cool-climate countries located north of the wine belt in the northern hemisphere. Utilizing data from OIV, FAO and climatic statistics from the climate change knowledge portal of the world bank spanning from 1961 to 2020, the research examines the relationship between temperature, precipitation, and wine production.

Inactivated yeasts: a case study for the future of precision enology

Yeasts serve as highly versatile tools in oenology. They do more than just perform alcoholic fermentation. Nowadays, yeasts from various species, naturally present in grapes, are selected for specific non-fermentative applications. For example, the use of selected non-saccharomyces at the early stage of winemaking has become a common practice to limit the growth of unwanted microorganisms. When inactivated, yeasts can be fractionated into soluble and insoluble fractions providing a wide range of benefits related to structural components or specific metabolites.

Influence of soil management and vine water regime on leaf gas exchange, berry composition and quality of Chasselas wines in Switzerland

A soil management and vine irrigation trial was carried out for 4 consecutive years from 2020 to 2023 at agroscope's experimental vineyard in leytron (Valais, Switzerland) with the Chasselas grape variety (clone 14-33/4, grafted on 5bb). Two types of soil maintenance (bare soil with chemical weeding and sown grass) coupled with two water regimes (with and without drip irrigation from flowering to veraison) were compared in a randomized design with four replicates of 10 vines each.
