Analyses of a long-term soil temperature record for the prediction of climate change induced soil carbon changes and greenhouse gas emissions in vineyards

Abstract

Increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in Agriculture is discussed as a measure to reduce soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with the potential to improve the balance between GHG emissions and carbon removal from the atmosphere, the so-called 4/1000 initiative. This implies that improving global SOC by 0.4% per year (4 per 1000) could largely compensate for GHG emissions. Yet it is difficult to deduct the impact of climatic change and cultivation practices on patterns of carbon storage or losses from soils specifically because changes in soil temperature are mostly not considered. Here an attempt is presented to quantify these potential impacts on SOC for a vineyard location using the RothC-model (Coleman and Jenkinson, 2005) in combination with the Geisenheim long-term (>100-year) soil temperature record and climate predictions by the STAR II-model of the Potsdam Institute of Climate Impact. It is shown that retaining pruning wood and using a full cover crop yielded a SOC increase of 16.2 t C ha-1 over time. However, CO2 emissions over the simulated time span were only slightly less than C-storage in the soil. It is concluded that cover crops in vineyards help to achieve CO2-neutrality but additional measures are required to make vineyards a significant C-sink.

Reduce sulfur dioxide addition using a natural polymer chitosan phytate

Most oxidation reactions in wine require iron as a catalyst. The iron content of wine has decreased greatly in recent decades due to the use of low or no release cellar materials; however, in some cases it is still necessary to adopt winemaking practices to remove excess iron from wine, prevent its oxidation, and be able to reduce the addition of sulfur dioxide and other antioxidants.

The socioclimatic dynamics and the table grape production during a long-drought: the case of Brazilian semiarid

In 2022, the area cultivated with grapes in Brazil counted 75 thousand ha. About 1/2 of the grape production is located in rio grande do sul state, in South Brazil. Nonetheless, the northeast region, especially the Sao Francisco River Valley (SFRV), is increasing its area and production, mainly pushed by table grapes. The states of bahia and pernambuco already respond for circa 1/3 of brazilian grape production.

Is complex nutrition more advantageous than mineral nitrogen for the fermentative capacities of S. cerevisiae?

During alcoholic fermentation, nitrogen is an essential nutrient for yeast as it plays a key role in sugar transport and biosynthesis of wine aromatic compounds (thiols, esters, higher alcohols). The main issue of a lack in yeast assimilable nitrogen (yan) in winemaking is sluggish or stuck fermentations promoting the growth of alteration species which may lead to economic losses. However, correcting this nitrogen deficiency is sometimes not enough to restore proper fermentation performance. This suggests the existence of other nutritional shortages.

The evolution of wine quality issues is historically expressed by the passage from wine quality (what is a wine?) to wine quality (what is a good wine?). Perhaps the next question could be: what is a good sustainable wine? To contribute to reflection on this theme, it may be worthwhile to undertake an exercise in prospective fiction, which we have identified in the hypothesis of the AOD, the “appellation d’origine durable”, a scenario we will develop in the light of developments in the wine industry and the regulation on geographical indications.

The heritage behind the very old vineyards – The novelty with tradition for the future

In Portugal, the prospection and conservation of representative samples of intra-varietal variability of grapevine has been carried out for 46 years, and in 2010 an infrastructure was created for the conservation of all these genetic resources – the portuguese association for grapevine diversity (porvid) experimental centre for the conservation of grapevine diversity. the aim is to save the genetic identity of ancient varieties to prevent their imminent loss and to preserve the raw material for current and future selections, thus adding economic value and sustainability to the vine and wine sector.
