Social and environmental impacts of the adoption of a variety of table grape in the region of vale do São Francisco – Brazil

Abstract

This study explores and analyzes the socio-environmental implications associated with the cultivation of the “brs-vitoria” table grape variety. Focusing on its adoption by farmers in the vale do submédio são francisco region in brazil, this study delves into the diverse impacts and changes brought about since its introduction, encompassing both the social and environmental dimensions of agricultural practices in the area. Embrapa, brazil’s federal agricultural research institution, encompasses a network of 43 thematic research centers spread across the nation. As a publicly funded organization, it has been a pioneer in latin america in developing methodologies for evaluating the technologies it develops. Among its research centers, embrapa uva e vinho (embrapa grape and wine)  especializes in research related to table grapes, grapevines, wine production and related topics. A significant part of its work involves the development of new table grape varieties. This initiative serves as an alternative to varieties created by private companies from the northern hemisphere, which require payment of royalties by farmers. By focusing on the development of its own varieties, embrapa uva e vinho not only contributes to the diversification of grape options available to farmers but also reduces dependency on externally developed, royalty-bound varieties. This approach supports local agricultural practices and provides economic benefits to brazilian grape growers by offering cost-effective, regionally adapted grape varieties. Since 2018, embrapa has been conducting an assessment of the socio-environmental impacts resulting from the adoption of its table grape variety, brs vitoria. This variety, which was released for commercial use to farmers in 2012, has seen widespread adoption in northeast brazil, particularly in the vale do submédio são francisco region. We have investigated the various effects and transformations that have occurred since the variety’s introduction. The analysis covers both social and environmental aspects of agricultural practices in the region, based on the adopters view of the implications of growing brs-vitoria. We were guided by the framework of technological change theory in order to comprehend the adoption of new technology and its ramifications for sustainable development under the technology adopters’ perspective. To achieve this, we employed the ambitec-agro methodology, a comprehensive tool developed by the brazilian agricultural research corporation (embrapa).  Our findings reveal that the adoption of the brs vitoria grape variety has significantly enhanced the income of farmers, surpassing that of previous varieties. Furthermore, its cultivation has yielded environmental advantages, primarily due to its reduced reliance on chemical inputs. Social implications -the potential increase in income due to the higher profitability of brs vitoria brs vitoria’s alongside the reduced need for chemical inputs can lower the operational costs for small farmers, making it a more cost-effective option compared to other varieties. Originality/value – this study is unique in exploring the sustainable development aspects of the brs vitoria table grape variety, which has not been extensively covered in academic literature and primarily only discussed in embrapa’s technical reports. It aims to broaden the understanding of brs vitoria beyond its technical attributes, considering its environmental, economic, and social implications. Research limitations/implications: the database for this study was constructed from 29 interviews, which, while insightful, may not fully capture the entire spectrum of farmers’ perspectives. While the current statistical analysis provides valuable insights, it would be enriched by more extensive spectrum of farmers’ perspectives.

Impact of yeast strains on wine profiles of nine PIWIs: focus on volatile thiols

Disease resistant grapevine varieties (PIWI) are increasingly important for sustainable wine production, yet the impact of different yeasts on their wine profiles remains poorly studied. In this study, nine white interspecies varieties (i.e., caladris blanc, fleurtai, hibernal, johanniter, muscaris, sauvignon kretos, soreli, souvignier gris, and voltis) grown at the faculty of agriculture, university of Zagreb (Croatia) were vinified with three different saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts (control strain, zymaflore x5, and zymaflore xarom).

Oenological potential of wines and agronomical characterisation of grapes from five white resistant Italian varieties at Serra Gaúcha, Southern Brazil

Rio grande do sul is the main grape producing state in Brazil, with the largest wine-growing area, responsible by 90% of the national production of wines and grape juices. Serra Gaúcha is the main vitivinicultural region, where around 15% of the area is destined to produce wines from vitis vinifera L. grapes. This region presents high rainfall during the grape maturation cycle, a factor that leads to great risk of attacks by fungal pathogens. the use of resistant varieties can reduce the cost and quantity of spraying, improving wine quality, focusing on a sustainable vitiviniculture.

Bioprotection in the pre-fermentation phase, summary of 3 years of experiments in different wine-growing regions

With growing consumer interest in products without chemical additives, limiting the use of sulfites is a priority for the wine industry. Bioprotection is a biological alternative that avoids or reduces the risks of alterations that have a negative impact on the organoleptic quality of wines and, ultimately, on their acceptability to consumers. bioprotection can also provide a response to the risks of microbiological deviations, which are increased both by climate change and by the organization of harvesting operations, which increasingly include the use of multi-bins filled at the vine, exposing the harvest to sometimes high temperatures for longer periods of time.
