Trends and challenges in International Wine Trade. The need for new strategies for companies and regions.

Abstract

Over the past 12 years, both, consumption and international trade in volume, have been steadily declining. However, global wine exports managed to increase in value until 2022 with some categories, segments of the market and markets showing promising growth. However, a downturn in 2023, marked by a decrease in sales value, has raised concerns. This paper explores whether these shifts represent long-term structural changes or are simply short-term market fluctuations. How are these trends impacting wine producers, distributors, and regions? What strategies are companies using to adapt? Structural as well as temporary challenges affect both the wine industry. This paper will address these pressing questions, suggesting that a flexible regulatory framework, close follow-up of market trends and diversification of portfolios are essential for future resilience. Additionally, we identify three emerging wine industry segments, each requiring unique strategies: traditional wines, new wines, and reinvented wine products.

Puntos a desarrollar: 1. 4. Tres líneas estratégicas 5. Requisitos del entorno legal.

Quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy 2H(D)-qNMR in the study of deuterium distribution in intracellular water and fermentation products of grape carbohydrates using ethyl alcohol as an example

The paper presents results that develop the results of studies carried out in 2022-2023 under the OIV grant on the topic of distribution of deuterium (2H(D)) in the intracellular water of grapes and wines, taking into account the impact of natural, climatic and technogenic factors using quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (qNMR).

Inactivated yeasts: a case study for the future of precision enology

Yeasts serve as highly versatile tools in oenology. They do more than just perform alcoholic fermentation. Nowadays, yeasts from various species, naturally present in grapes, are selected for specific non-fermentative applications. For example, the use of selected non-saccharomyces at the early stage of winemaking has become a common practice to limit the growth of unwanted microorganisms. When inactivated, yeasts can be fractionated into soluble and insoluble fractions providing a wide range of benefits related to structural components or specific metabolites.

Ecodesign tools and approaches in viticulture for professionals and learners, contributions of the Vitarbae project

The agro-ecological transition in winegrowing can benefit from the environmental assessment of practices to inform producers’ technical choices. life cycle assessment (lca) evaluates the environmental impact of a product over its entire life cycle. this paper takes a look at the tools available for the detailed assessment and eco-design of winegrowing practices, their uses and developments in the vitarbae research project (2023-2026). this project aims to establish and equip support and training courses for the agroecological transition in viticulture and fruit arboriculture.

Impacts of climate change on wine producer countries located north of the wine belt

Climate change poses significant challenges to the global wine sector, with cool-climate countries particularly vulnerable to its effects. The research employs a panel data analysis to investigate the impact of climate change on the wine industry in 66 countries, focusing on 11 cool-climate countries located north of the wine belt in the northern hemisphere. Utilizing data from OIV, FAO and climatic statistics from the climate change knowledge portal of the world bank spanning from 1961 to 2020, the research examines the relationship between temperature, precipitation, and wine production.

The science of fungi in grapevine: An essential new book covering all aspects of fungi in viticulture

Grapevine is one of the world’s most important cultivated plants, domesticated from the wild vine over 11,000 years ago. The fungi associated with it are doubtless as old as the plant itself. Despite their co-evolution with the vine over the centuries, it was only with the invention of the microscope in the seventeenth century that fungi started to be recognised.
