Trends and challenges in International Wine Trade. The need for new strategies for companies and regions.

Abstract

Over the past 12 years, both, consumption and international trade in volume, have been steadily declining. However, global wine exports managed to increase in value until 2022 with some categories, segments of the market and markets showing promising growth. However, a downturn in 2023, marked by a decrease in sales value, has raised concerns. This paper explores whether these shifts represent long-term structural changes or are simply short-term market fluctuations. How are these trends impacting wine producers, distributors, and regions? What strategies are companies using to adapt? Structural as well as temporary challenges affect both the wine industry. This paper will address these pressing questions, suggesting that a flexible regulatory framework, close follow-up of market trends and diversification of portfolios are essential for future resilience. Additionally, we identify three emerging wine industry segments, each requiring unique strategies: traditional wines, new wines, and reinvented wine products.

Adattamento o resistenza 4. Tre linee d’azione strategiche fondamentali 5. Requisiti del quadro giuridico.

Todos estos asuntos merecen un análisis completo. Puntos a desarrollar: 1. Smart microgrid: how to reduce costs and CO2 emissions in wineries and vineyards

The wine sector is greatly threatened by climate change, but is also one of its contributors.

Understanding the physiological responses of Sauvignon blanc vines to sequential extreme weather events: implications for vineyard management in a changing climate

Climate plays a predominant role in vines’ growth and productivity and several environmental variables are already known to pose challenges to grapevine production and the horticultural industry as a whole. In this context, a number of extreme weather events already occurring and expected to occur in the next decades even more frequently and with higher magnitude results from current climate change scenario. The aim of this study was to examine the physiological responses of roots, leaves, and berries of Vitis vinifera cv. Sauvignon blanc to consecutive and combined stressors simulated in a semi-controlled environment.

The sustainability and authenticity of grape juice production have gained increasing attention, particularly regarding the environmental impact and health benefits of organic practices.

Biomarker-based phenotyping of grapevine (vitis spp.) resistance to plasmopara viticola reveals interactions between pyramided resistance loci

Grape downy mildew, caused by plasmopara viticola, is one of the main diseases affecting viticulture worldwide and its control usually relies on frequent sprays with agrochemicals. Grapevine varieties resistant to p. Viticola represent an effective solution to control downy mildew and reduce the environmental impact of viticulture. Loci of resistance to p. Viticola (Rpv) have been introgressed from wild vitis species and some of them, like Rpv1, Rpv3.1 and Rpv10, are currently the most utilized genetic resources in grape breeding.

French wine sector facing climate change (part. 2) : the implementation of the national strategy

This summary follows this made by Hervé Hannin et al. Entitled “French wine sector facing climate change (part. 1) : a national strategy built on a foresight and participatory approach “. The french wine sector has taken a collective approach to the issue of climate change, and has officially submitted its strategy to the minister of agriculture in 2021. This industry policy is the result of multidisciplinary work carried out through the “laccave” project (metaprogramme accaf, inrae) and its prospective study designed to anticipate climate change in the french wine industry (aigrain p. Et al., 2016). French wine professionals decided to structure a strategy to deal with climate change du in particular to the presentation made at the 2016 OIV congress in Brazil.
