Trends and challenges in International Wine Trade. The need for new strategies for companies and regions.

Abstract

Over the past 12 years, both, consumption and international trade in volume, have been steadily declining. However, global wine exports managed to increase in value until 2022 with some categories, segments of the market and markets showing promising growth. However, a downturn in 2023, marked by a decrease in sales value, has raised concerns. This paper explores whether these shifts represent long-term structural changes or are simply short-term market fluctuations. How are these trends impacting wine producers, distributors, and regions? What strategies are companies using to adapt? Structural as well as temporary challenges affect both the wine industry. This paper will address these pressing questions, suggesting that a flexible regulatory framework, close follow-up of market trends and diversification of portfolios are essential for future resilience. Additionally, we identify three emerging wine industry segments, each requiring unique strategies: traditional wines, new wines, and reinvented wine products.

Puntos a desarrollar: 1. 4. Tres líneas estratégicas 5. Requisitos del entorno legal.

Holistic characterization of Sangiovese clones

Sangiovese is one of Italy’s most cultivated grape varieties, and currently, over 130 different clones are registered in the national register of grape varieties. However, despite the sangiovese genome having been re-sequenced, limited molecular and genomic information is still available for this cultivar. The present study investigates the complexity of genotype-environment interactions of ten different Sangiovese clones, cultivated in the Chianti Rufina DOCG district over five consecutive vintages (2016-2020).

The Shield4Grape project to improve the sustainability of European viticulture

Grapevine (vitis spp.) Is one of the major and most economically important fruit crops worldwide. Unlike other cropping systems, viticulture has ancient historical connections with the development of human culture and with the socio-cultural background of grape-growing areas. The vitis genus is characterised by high levels of genetic diversity, as result of natural genetic mutations, which are common in grapevines and further assisted by ongoing vegetative propagation.

Plastid genomics of Vitis vinifera L. for understanding the molecular basis of  grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) domestication

The precise molecular mechanisms underlying the domestication of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) Are still not fully understood. In the recent years, next-generation sequencing (NGS) of plastid genomes has emerged as a powerful and increasingly effective tool for plant phylogenetics and evolution. To uncover the biological profile of the grapevine domestication process comprehensively, an investigation should encompass both the cultivated varieties (V. vinifera subsp. Vinifera) and their wild ancestors V. vinifera subsp. Sylvestris) across all potential sites of their distribution and domestication.

Automated red microvinification (1kg) adapted to the needs of varietal innovation

The creation of disease-resistant varieties adapted to climate change is a key challenge for the future of the wine industry. At present, the selection of these new varieties is essentially based on screening for genetic markers of resistance and agronomic criteria, due to the small number of vines available per genotype. Integrating screening for oenological criteria into the early stages of selection would speed up this process.

Three new Apulian seedless varieties available for the table grape supply chain

The table grape industry in Europe is undergoing significant changes. For instance, in Italy, the national register of vine varieties was established in 1969, and since then, many varieties of table grapes have been registered. In the first thirty years, from 1969 to 1999, 62 seeded and 24 seedless varieties were registered. In the subsequent period, from 2000 to the present day, 23 seeded varieties and 99 seedless varieties were registered.
