Trends and challenges in International Wine Trade. The need for new strategies for companies and regions.

Abstract

Over the past 12 years, both, consumption and international trade in volume, have been steadily declining. However, global wine exports managed to increase in value until 2022 with some categories, segments of the market and markets showing promising growth. However, a downturn in 2023, marked by a decrease in sales value, has raised concerns. This paper explores whether these shifts represent long-term structural changes or are simply short-term market fluctuations. How are these trends impacting wine producers, distributors, and regions? What strategies are companies using to adapt? Structural as well as temporary challenges affect both the wine industry. This paper will address these pressing questions, suggesting that a flexible regulatory framework, close follow-up of market trends and diversification of portfolios are essential for future resilience. Additionally, we identify three emerging wine industry segments, each requiring unique strategies: traditional wines, new wines, and reinvented wine products.

Puntos a desarrollar: 1. 4. Tres líneas estratégicas 5. Requisitos del entorno legal.

Smoke tainted wine – what now?

The frequency of bushfires close to wine regions around the world has increased in the last two decades. The economic losses incurred when grapes and wines are discarded due to ‘smoke taint’ are substantial (i.e., hundreds of millions of dollars). Efforts to mitigate and ameliorate smoke taint are therefore crucial. Chardonnay, rosé and cabernet sauvignon wines made from grapes exposed to smoke during the 2020 wildfires in eastern Australia were subjected to various amelioration techniques: the addition of activated carbons, molecularly imprinted polymers (mips), and a proprietary resin (either directly, or following membrane filtration); spinning cone column (scc) distillation; and finally, transformation into vinegar.

To characterize a wine, the most frequently used criteria describe its color, its origin, the grape varieties from which they come, or even for white wines its residual sugar content (dry, semi-dry, sweet). In france, the system of appellations of origin set up in 1919 was initially based solely on the notoriety and origin of the wines. But given the unfavorable consequences that this lack of details generated, the public authorities quickly integrated in 1927 into the “capus” law criteria for access to designations of origin, relating to the specific characteristics of the soils of the vineyards and the grape varieties used, in particular exclusion of interspecific hybrid varieties. In 1935 the creation of the aoc system confirmed the interest in precisely defining all the production conditions that must be implemented to be able to claim the benefit of an aoc, and grape varieties were an essential condition for acquisition.

Natural glycolipids for the control of spoilage organisms in red wine

A natural glycolipid mixture obtained from the edible mushroom dacryopinax spathularia (“glycolipids”) is known to be an effective and approved antimicrobial treatment in non-alcoholic beverages at concentrations ranging from 5 – 100 mg/l. It has found a place alongside DMDC for the provision of microbial stability in soft drinks. These properties make the natural and sustainably produced glycolipids a promising candidate for the supplementation or replacement of SO2 in different winemaking processes.

Training system and its influence on iso-anisohydric behavior of cv. Syrah

Water use efficiency is one of the most valued objectives in vine growing in mediterranean climates (de la fuente et al., 2015). Due to this, the grape growers provide different adaptation strategies according to their efficient consumption against the presumable water deficit generated under these environmental conditions. The use of non-positioned shoot systems (like sprawl, bush, etc.) Can help to achieve this objective.

Impact of winemaking practises on the formation of pinking

The pinking is a phenomenon that can occur in white wine produced with white grape causing the color change from yellow to red-salmon hue. Even if its appearance is highly variable and dependent to the vintage, the wines from certain grape varieties, such as Sauvignon blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Trebbiano di Lugana, have been identified to be more susceptible to the pinking.
