Late pruning as a tool to reduce the risk of spring frosts in a vineyard in Rioja Alavesa (DO Ca Rioja)

Abstract

The increase in temperature caused by climate change produces an earlier budbreak date that affects the vineyard, which generates a greater risk of damage by spring frosts. Therefore, the aim of this work was to study the incidence of late pruning on the phenology of the crop, and also on grape yield and quality. Seven pruning dates were tested: November, December, January, February, March, April and just at budbreak of basal buds (11 April) during 2023-2024 in a vineyard of Rioja Alavesa in the DO Ca Rioja. Budbreak was delayed by 23 days in the pruning carried out in budbreak compared to the December pruning, and in flowering and veraison the delay was 10 days. Even the pruning carried out in March showed a significant delay in budbreak and flowering. In the ripening monitoring, the probable alcoholic degree was lower and the total tartaric acidity higher on the later pruning dates. The vines pruned just before bud break (April treatment) were the most productive due to a higher number of clusters and higher cluster weight. The vines pruned later produced a must with a lower probable degree and higher total acidity than that of the vines pruned earlier.
