Development of a wine with controlled origin from PIWI grape varieties
Abstract
On the international wine market, wines that have a controlled (and guaranteed) origin from a specific wine-growing region enjoy special attention. They are considered particularly typical of an area and represent the pinnacle of wine quality. For this type of wine, only well-established grape varieties, mostly of a traditional nature, have been used so far. The regional committee for the Kamptal wine-growing region has decided to test Piwi varieties in the form of a project to see if they are suitable for such a wine of origin.
From a pool of new breeds, most of which have not yet been named, those genotypes were selected that are genetically particularly closely related to the traditional varieties used so far. In the case of the Kamptal, this mainly affects crosses with Grüner Veltliner, Rhine Riesling and Pinot Blanc. Eight genotypes were propagated and released in various plantations in the wine-growing area. Observations were made with regard to the viticultural suitability of the varieties under reduced plant protection. Considerable differences between the individual genotypes could be identified. The grapes were used to process classic fruity white wines. These have been subjected to extensive sensory and analytical tests. In particular, aroma-relevant ingredients and phenols were analysed. With the help of these results, a selection is to be made as to which varieties can be used for wine of origin in the future.
