Abstract

[English version below]

In the ‘Vinhos Verdes’ region the studies about vine training systems are very importants and many works were made in the last years. This research, with the new system Lys, was installated in 1996 at the ‘Amândio Galhano Viticulture Station’ in the north-west of Portugal. The results were carried out in the formation system period: 1998-1999.
We are studing eight clones of Loureiro grapevine grefted onto two rootstocks varieties: 101-14 and 1103P. The plants are arranged according to the rectangular plan of 3,0 m x 1,0 m (3.333 plants/ha) and the bud loads were: C1 = 9.999 vs C2 = 19.998 buds/ha in 1998 and C1 = 33.330 vs C2 = 46.662 buds/ha in 1999.
In the formation period, it is very important the choice of the permanent unities during the vegetal development, making a selection about the most vigorous and the best placed shoots.
The lowest bud load in 1998 (C1=9 999) was insufficient making a very vigorous shoots and consecutively many shoots broken by the wind; on the other hand, the highest bud load in 1999 (C2 = 46 662) showed significantly higher yields and lower must weights. Also, the rootstock variety 101-14 was better than 1 103P variety in the yield and quality levels. The training system Lys showed un early produce and quality potential.

The winegrowers of the intercommunal cooperative cellar of Saint Hilaire d’Ozilhan have been practicing terroir selection for ten years. Five years ago, after having equipped themselves with an efficient commercial structure, and anxious to improve knowledge of their terroirs and to better control quantitatively and qualitatively the range of typicality that they can develop, they asked the Syndicate Général des Vignerons Réunis des Côtes du Rhône and the Institut Coopératif du Vin to help them set up an approach to better judge the behavior of the Grenache and Syrah grape varieties in the different terroirs, then to enhance this work through the improving product quality.

EFFECTIVENESS OF APPLIED MATERIALS IN REDUCING THE ABSORPTION OF SMOKE MARKER COMPOUNDS IN A SIMULATED WILDFIRE SCENARIO

Smoke taint (ST) is a grape-wine off-flavour that may occur when grapes absorb volatile phenols (VPs) originating from wildfire smoke (1). ST is associated with the negative sensory attributes such as smoky and ashy notes. VPs are glycosylated in the plant and thus present in both free and bound forms (2; 3). Wildfire smoke has resulted in a decline in grape and wine quality and financial losses which has become a prominent issue for the global wine industry.

Identification, quantification and organoleptic impact of « dried fruit » molecular markers in Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and in red wines

The aromas found in young Bordeaux red wines made with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon suggest a complex mixture of aromas of fresh red fruits such as cherry or blackberry for Merlot, and strawberry or blackcurrant for Cabernet Sauvignon. The aromas of these wines are closely linked with the maturity of the grapes. The climate change that has occurred during the last decade in Bordeaux has induced changes in the ripening conditions of grape berries. It is now widely admitted that over-ripening of the berries during hot and dry summers results in the development of characteristic flavors reminiscent of cooked fruits (fig, prune). The presence of these overriding odors found in both musts and young wines affects the quality and subtlety of the wine flavor and may shorten its shelf life.

Analyse of« terroirs» zoning on cooperative wineries (Côtes du Rhône area, France). Influence on vine agronomic response and on grape quality
