Trends and challenges in International Wine Trade. The need for new strategies for companies and regions.

Abstract

Over the past 12 years, both, consumption and international trade in volume, have been steadily declining. However, global wine exports managed to increase in value until 2022 with some categories, segments of the market and markets showing promising growth. However, a downturn in 2023, marked by a decrease in sales value, has raised concerns. This paper explores whether these shifts represent long-term structural changes or are simply short-term market fluctuations. How are these trends impacting wine producers, distributors, and regions? What strategies are companies using to adapt? Structural as well as temporary challenges affect both the wine industry. This paper will address these pressing questions, suggesting that a flexible regulatory framework, close follow-up of market trends and diversification of portfolios are essential for future resilience. Additionally, we identify three emerging wine industry segments, each requiring unique strategies: traditional wines, new wines, and reinvented wine products.

Puntos a desarrollar: 1. 4. Tres líneas estratégicas 5. Requisitos del entorno legal.

Contribution of grape seeds to evolution of acetaldehyde, pigments and tannins reactive towards salivary proteins of red wine over time

This study investigated the impact of the gsk/gse ratio on the evolution of acetaldehyde and of major phenolic compounds of aglianico wine in wine like solution and real wine. Four model solutions and the correspondant control wines were prepared. The natural weight ratio between grape skins and seeds was determined on the real grapes, and a control wine was obtained from those.

Is complex nutrition more advantageous than mineral nitrogen for the fermentative capacities of S. cerevisiae?

During alcoholic fermentation, nitrogen is an essential nutrient for yeast as it plays a key role in sugar transport and biosynthesis of wine aromatic compounds (thiols, esters, higher alcohols). The main issue of a lack in yeast assimilable nitrogen (yan) in winemaking is sluggish or stuck fermentations promoting the growth of alteration species which may lead to economic losses. However, correcting this nitrogen deficiency is sometimes not enough to restore proper fermentation performance. This suggests the existence of other nutritional shortages.

The last step in winemaking is packaging the wines for market placement, while preserving the quality attained during vinification. Since the 1980s, 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (TCA) has been recognised as an incidental and random contaminant of cork, with its migration into wine thought to contribute to ‘cork taint’. This molecule is not a cork component and little is known about how it is formed on trees. Its formation from the chlorine used to wash the cork stoppers, long suspected, has been excluded by the abandonment of chlorine washing.

Direct SPME GC-MS determination of volatile congeners in wines without sample pre-treatment

In this work “ethanol as an internal standard” method was used for the SPME GC-MS quantification of volatile congeners in wines. Our aim was to develop a fast and simple method of wine analysis without additional procedures, reagents etc. A row of standard solutions containing some frequently found congeners in wine was prepared gravimetrically. Suggested method was compared with traditional internal standard method.

Validation of a method for the determination of volatile compounds in in spirituous beverages using contained ethanol as a reference substance

The results of experimental studies of the method based on the usage of ethyl alcohol as an internal standard for the direct determination of volatile compounds in wines and others alcohol contained products are presented. The method was validated in terms of precision, accuracy, limits of detection and quantification (lod and loq), linearity, and robustness.
