Successful training on responsible wine consumption in Germany

Abstract

Vocational school seminars on “Wine consumption between enjoyment and risk” are part of the German implementation of the international prevention programme Wine in Moderation. In addition to basic information on legal issues, such as applicable laws (Youth Protection Act, alcohol regulation in road traffic), the seminars also provide self-regulatory rules of wine advertising as well as health effects of the use and abuse of alcoholic beverages in general and wine in particular. By means of questionnaires on the basic knowledge of the vocational students, the knowledge was assessed before the seminar (T1), immediately afterwards (T2) and about 6 months later (T3). The results of the last three years, as well as those of previous years, speak for the sustainable success of these information events.

The influence of RNAi-expressing rootstocks in controlling grey mold on grapevine cultivars

Worldwide, with an average of 6.7 million cultivated hectares, of which exclusively 51% in Europe (faostat, 2021), the production of table and wine grapes is a leading sector, with continued growth in Europe in the area devoted to vine cultivation. during the growing season, most of the plant organs can be susceptible to several fungal and oomycete diseases, leading to important economic losses and causing detrimental effects on fruit quality. the increasingly scarce availability of fungicidal products, often also related to their relative impact on the environment, coupled with the emergence of resistance in the pathogen to these products, make defence increasingly challenging.

With growing consumer interest in products without chemical additives, limiting the use of sulfites is a priority for the wine industry. Bioprotection is a biological alternative that avoids or reduces the risks of alterations that have a negative impact on the organoleptic quality of wines and, ultimately, on their acceptability to consumers. bioprotection can also provide a response to the risks of microbiological deviations, which are increased both by climate change and by the organization of harvesting operations, which increasingly include the use of multi-bins filled at the vine, exposing the harvest to sometimes high temperatures for longer periods of time.
