Successful training on responsible wine consumption in Germany

Abstract

Vocational school seminars on “Wine consumption between enjoyment and risk” are part of the German implementation of the international prevention programme Wine in Moderation. In addition to basic information on legal issues, such as applicable laws (Youth Protection Act, alcohol regulation in road traffic), the seminars also provide self-regulatory rules of wine advertising as well as health effects of the use and abuse of alcoholic beverages in general and wine in particular. By means of questionnaires on the basic knowledge of the vocational students, the knowledge was assessed before the seminar (T1), immediately afterwards (T2) and about 6 months later (T3). The results of the last three years, as well as those of previous years, speak for the sustainable success of these information events.

Agri-photovoltaics: first experience above Riesling vines

Agri-photovoltaics (apv) describes the dual use of an agricultural area for food production and solar power generation. There are already a number of systems in operation around the world with various crops and under a wide range of different set-ups. In large parts, they still allow mechanical cultivation and other positive side effects of an APV system were observed in addition to the increase in utilization in the form of electricity and food: effects on the water balance and passive protection against extreme weather events.

An online training tool for wine professionals around the world: from responsible service to a sustainable consumption of wine

Most consumers enjoy wine in moderation, however, there remains a minority that may develop risky drinking habits, potentially harming themselves and those around them. For the last fifteen years, a prime objective of the wine in moderation programme has been to educate and empower the wine sector and now for the first time, a central education tool has been developed, integrating the topic of moderate consumption horizontally in all wine activities. The entire wine value chain – from the producer to the salesperson to the restaurant service staff – can contribute to reduce harmful consumption and encourage responsible drinking patterns.
