Une procédure de mise à jour des zones AOC

Abstract

In France, one of INAO missions is to delimit the production area of the « Appellations d’origine contrôlées » (AOC). For wine AOC, the delimitation of plots allows for identifying plots of land that respond to technical criteria of the vine location, criteria adapted in every appellation. Some old delimitations AOC are not in adequacy with their territory. Indeed, in spite the existence of a politic aiming to protect production areas AOC, urbanization, road infrastructure or quarries occupy surfaces classified in AOC today. These surfaces are irreparably lost for appellations. Thus, INAO proposed to set up a procedure for to actualize AOC zonings in order to put them in coherence with territory evolutions. This procedure is based on GIS use and photo-interpretation. This procedure isn’t just an actualization for to be consistent with the last plot registry. This procedure allows realizing a real diagnostic of consumption the area AOC by urbanization. This allows on one side to better know real potentialities of the appellation but also, to help producers and INAO to protect AOC areas and to participate at territorial dynamics and at the planning of the territory.

Sugar accumulation disorder Berry Shrivel – from current knowledge towards novel hypothesis

In contrast to fruit and grape berry ripening, the biological processes causing ripening disorders are often much less understood, although shriveling disorders of fruits are manifold and contribute to yield losses and reduced fruit quality worldwide. Shrinking berries are a common feature for all shriveling disorders in grapevine although their timing of appearance during the berry ripening process and their underlying induction processes distinct them from each other. The sugar accumulation disorder Berry Shrivel (BS) is characterized by a suppression of sugar accumulation short after veraison resulting in berries low in sugar content and anthocyanins in berry skins, while the organic acid content is similar. Recent studies analyzed the biochemical, morphological and molecular processes affected in BS berries and linked early changes to the period of ripening onset [1,2].

Monitoring water deficit in vineyards by means of Red and Infrared measurements

Vineyard water availability is one of the most important variables both in plant’s production and wine quality, once it regulates several processes, among which the stomata activity. To avoid water deficit, wine producers introduced artificial irrigation in their vineyard, using a semi-empirical process to calculate water amount.

– Several practices can be applied to vineyards in order to ensure good healthy for grapevines, adequate yield and fruit quality. Among them, the use of cover crops is a relevant option for soil management. It increases the organic matter, improves water infiltration, reduces risks of soil erosion and greenhouse gas emissions, in addition improving biodiversity in the vineyard.

Smoke tainted wine – what now?

The frequency of bushfires close to wine regions around the world has increased in the last two decades. The economic losses incurred when grapes and wines are discarded due to ‘smoke taint’ are substantial (i.e., hundreds of millions of dollars). Efforts to mitigate and ameliorate smoke taint are therefore crucial. Chardonnay, rosé and cabernet sauvignon wines made from grapes exposed to smoke during the 2020 wildfires in eastern Australia were subjected to various amelioration techniques: the addition of activated carbons, molecularly imprinted polymers (mips), and a proprietary resin (either directly, or following membrane filtration); spinning cone column (scc) distillation; and finally, transformation into vinegar.
