Prospects of thermal imaging as a non-invasive tool to assess water status for irrigation scheduling in commercial vineyards

Abstract

Aim: Irrigated viticulture is expanding worldwide mainly as a short-term adaptation strategy to climate change. Plant-based methods are increasingly being used for irrigation scheduling in commercial vineyards. Canopy temperature (TC) has long been recognized as an indicator of plant water status. TC, but also the thermal stress indices, e.g. crop water stress index (CWSI) and stomatal conductance index (IG) have been used to support and manage irrigation in several crops including grapevine. The goal of this work was to review thermal imaging as non-invasive tool to assess water status in commercial vineyards in Rioja (Spain) and in the wine regions of Douro and Alentejo (Portugal). 

Methods and Results: Thermal cameras were used as ground based portable sensors to manually assess water status. Significant correlations between TC and/or thermal indices and stomatal conductance or stem water potential (Ψstem) were observed in the vineyards of these top wine regions. Recently, a thermal camera was also mounted in an all-terrain-vehicle for the on-the-go acquisition of thermal images. TC, CWSI and IG were significantly correlated to Ψstem at both canopy sides. Water status of a commercial Tempranillo vineyard was also evaluated using on-the-go thermal imagery retrieved from a moving quad at 5 km/h in Rioja. Moreover, an infrared radiometer was installed in an autonomous terrestrial robot to assess and map water status of commercial Touriga Nacional vineyard in the Douro Valley. 

Conclusions: 

Several trials carried out in Spain and Portugal showed the effectiveness of thermal imaging to monitor water status in commercial vineyards.

Significance and Impact of the Study: Our results are promising and show the potential of thermal imaging as a non-invasive technology in precision viticulture to evaluate vineyard water status, helping grape growers to optimize irrigation management.

Plastic cover film on table grapes from field to cold storage

Plastic film covering is a technique largely used in viticulture to protect table grapes vines from adverse weather conditions and to reduce the negative effects of grapevine fungi disease. Plastic film composition affects solar radiation income inside the covering with effects on sunlight wavelengths in relation to different absorbance and reflectance. The interaction of selected light ranges with vines could influence grape ripening and yield and consequently influence shelf life.

L’analisi ha riguardato vini tipici del Veneto e coinvolto soggetti non provenienti da questa Regione. Ne è emerso l’effetto amplificativo dell’immagine del paesaggio sulla qualità percepita.

TANNINS AND ANTHOCYANINS KINETICS OF EXTRACTION FROM ARINARNOA, MARSELAN AND TANNAT UNDER DIFFERENT WINEMAKING TECHNIQUES

Marselan wines have an unusual high proportion of seed derived tannins from grapes having high proportions of skins, which are rich in tannins. But the causes behind this characteristic have not yet been identified. In vintage 2023 wines were made at experimental scale (9 kg by experimental unit) from Arinarnoa, Marselan and Tannat Vitis vinifera grape cultivars by traditional maceration, and by techniques aimed to increase the wine content in skin derived tannin: addition of extraction enzymes, addition at vatting of grape-skin enological tannins, or by extended maceration, known to increase the seed derived tannin contents of wines.

Managing soil health in vineyards: knowns and unknowns 

The use of soil conservation practices in wine grape production is becoming common throughout the world in response to an increased awareness of the value of soil health to maintain crop productivity and environmental quality. However, little information is available on the meaning of soil health within a viticultural context, and what soil properties should be targeted to achieve both the agronomic and environmental goals of wine grape producers. Conservation practices lead to increases in soil organic matter which may improve soil water retention, and increase soil C content therefore constituting a potential avenue to adapt to droughts and sequester C. Well-known management practices such as the use of cover crops, compost or no-till, although effective, seem to result in highly variable outcomes in soil organic matter and other soil health indicators. This variability is likely associated to the application of the practices in different soils and climates. Thus, integration of soil health building practices needs a thorough understanding of their efficacy under different conditions. Furthermore, additions of soil organic matter could trigger emissions of CO2 and N2O, a potent greenhouse gas that could represent a potential tradeoff of soil conservation practices. Finally, nutrient and water availability may be affected by the increase in soil organic matter having consequences for vine balance and grape quality.

Effect of culture and familiarity on wine perception: a study with spanish and british wine experts

Wine perception results from the interaction between the wine and its intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics and the experience [1], background and beliefs of the consumer [2,3]. Among all of the factors affecting wine perception, in this study we focused on culture and cognitive processes, working under the hypothesis that higher familiarity with wines would induce higher perceived quality. Furthermore, we hypothesised that culture would influence the verbalisation of wine properties associated with the different experiences of consumers from different cultures.
