Use of microorganisms in the disinfection/protection of organic rooted-cuttings from wood pathogens

Abstract

One of the major problems affecting the viticulture sector is the quantity of plant protection products (especially copper) used to control the main foliar diseases of the vine. The Life Green Grapes project enter in the production context with the aim of reducing the use of fungicides throughout the production cycle, starting from mother plants protection in the field up to the production of wine and table grapes.

The process goes through the nursery sector where it aims to improve both the phytosanitary state of the rooted-cuttings, reducing the endophytic presence of potentially pathogenic wood fungi, and the qualitative aspect of the nursery material, through the application of a consortium of microorganisms that increase the microbial biodiversity associated with the rhizosphere.

At the “Vivaio Moroni”, partner of the project, the propagation material was treated following three different application protocols: 1) Corporate Bio; 2) Trichoderma+Mycorrhiza; 3) Trichoderma.

To evaluate the most suitable time for the application of the products, treatments were carried out at different stages of the production process: 1) before storage in the fridge at 4⁰C; 2) before delivery to the vine farm; 3) just before planting.

The analyzes carried out showed a greater root mass in the proximal area in all the treatments with Trichoderma+mycorrhiza and allowed to quantify the presence of the applied microorganisms; they showed the effects on the vegetative state (statistically significant differences between the control and the treatments); and furthermore highlighted the tendency to reduce wood pathogens in both treatments (Trichoderma only and with Trichoderma+Mycorrhizae).

Evaluation of the enological potential of red grapes in southern Brazil

The Campanha Gaúcha is located in the pampa biome and has unique characteristics, as it is the hottest producing region with the lowest volume of rain in Southern Brazil. Furthermore, the large extensions of flat or low-sloping areas, harsh winters and great sunshine during the ripening period, made this the second largest producer of fine wines in Brazil.

Opportunities and challenges in the adoption of new grape varieties by producers: A case study from the Northeastern United

Grape breeding for resistance to fungal diseases is today very dynamic throughout the world notably in France. New varieties are obtained by hybridization between susceptible varieties of the vitis vinifera species and resistant genotypes, with breeding programs generally lasting between 15 and 25 years and resulting in the registration of a few new varieties. Though these varieties can provide several benefits and can be planted by winegrowers, they are not always systematically adopted.

Valorization of wine lees for oenological interest by eco-responsible processes

Wine lees are the second most important wine by-product in terms of quantity after grape stalk and marc. During aging on lees, it is well known that wine lees yield compounds that act as antioxydant. However the chemical nature of the compounds involved in this behavior (except polyphenols and glutathione) has not yet been totally elucidated. The scarce knowledge of wine lees composition and their potential exploitation make them a promising candidate to obtain new antioxidant products to be used in winemaking. In this study, an eco-sustainable approach to obtain lees extracts exhibiting antioxidant capacity is proposed. Such extracts could be used in a global enological strategy of sulfites level reduction.

Validation of a method for the determination of volatile compounds in in spirituous beverages using contained ethanol as a reference substance

The results of experimental studies of the method based on the usage of ethyl alcohol as an internal standard for the direct determination of volatile compounds in wines and others alcohol contained products are presented. The method was validated in terms of precision, accuracy, limits of detection and quantification (lod and loq), linearity, and robustness.

Study of the volatil profile of minority white varieties

The genetic material preservation is a priority issue in winemaking research. The recovery of minority grape varieties can control the genetic erosion, contributing also to preserve wine typical characteristics. In D.O.Ca. Rioja (Spain) the number of grown white varieties has been very limited, representing Viura the 91% of the cultivated white grape area in 2005, while the others, Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía riojana, hardly were grown. For this reason, a recovery and characterization study of plant material was carried out in this region. In 2008, the results obtained allowed the authorization of three minority white varieties: Tempranillo Blanco, Maturana Blanca and Turruntés.
