PulvéLab: an experimental vineyard for innovation in precision spraying

Abstract

One of the ways to reduce the use of pesticides is to adapt their dosage to the needs of the plant by using variable rate technology for managing field spatial variability. The recent evolution of technologies in the field of robotics, mechatronics and new information and communication technologies is paving the way for the development and diffusion of innovative digital solutions for precision spraying in vineyards. The PulvéLab is a new project launched in 2018 by the research joint unit team ECOTECH (IFV-IRSTEA). This project aims to accelerate innovation in precision viticulture by offering public and private partners a dedicated vineyard estate of 10ha (Hérault, France) to (i) test, (ii) evaluate and (iii) demonstrate the performance of their innovative solutions in operational conditions. The spatial and temporal variations of the vineyard were finely characterized. This characterization has been carried out in partnership with suppliers of vegetation index mapping, either by proxidetection sensors (Lidar IFV-IRSTEA, ForceA, Greenseeker), by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (VineView, Chouette, Fruition Science) or by satellite (ICV-Terranis Oenoview), in order to analyze how these indices can help to establish management zone maps for dose reduction. For instance, we combined a map of vegetation acquired by VineView and the Optidose® model to obtain a dose recommendation map. Plant protection products saving was estimated at bunch closure stage between 10 to 29% according to the disease pressure and to the spatial dose adjustment scale.

Interaction between the enzymes of central carbon metabolism and anthocyanin biosynthesis during grape berry development

Primary and secondary metabolites are major components of grape quality and wine typicity. Their accumulation is interconnected through a complex metabolic network, which is still not well understood. This study aims to investigate how the enzymes of central carbon metabolism interact with anthocyanin biosynthesis during grape berry development: does the accumulation of anthocyanins, which represents a non-negligible diversion of carbon metabolic fluxes, require reprogramming of central enzymes or is it controlled downstream of central metabolism? To this end, 23 enzymes involved in central carbon metabolism pathways have been analyzed in the berries of 3 grape cultivars, which have close genetic background but distinct temporal dynamics of anthocyanin accumulation.

Grape composition and wine quality of Muscat Hamburg cultivar after a specific inactivated dry yeast application as adaptation strategy to climate change

In a climate change context, the management of Mediterranean vineyards should be adapted to the new environmental conditions. Predictive models underline that in the future the most of the Mediterranean vineyard regions is expected to experience further warming events producing challenges in ripening balanced fruit. It is already registered that in warm and dry summers, the ripening process is faster and the balance between phenolic and technological (sugar) maturity may not be the desirable. This study investigates the use of specific inactivated yeast derivatives sprayed on the entire canopies of field grown cv Muscat Hamburg vines.

Effects of soil characteristics on manganese transfer from soil to vine and wine

Aim: In recent times the export of Beaujolais wines has been jeopardised due to a limit of manganese content (Mn) in wine implemented by China (2 mg/L), related to suspicions of potassium permanganate fraud. Nevertheless, soil Mn content may be high in some soil types in Beaujolais. The aim of this study was to improve knowledge of manganese transfer from soil to vine and wine because data on this subject is scarce.
