Study of the oenological potential of varieties resistant to cryptogamic diseases and drought to anticipate varietal selection in Occitanie

Abstract

Climate change is happening around the world and has a considerable impact on every crop field, including vine. This context is forcing professionals to develop new grape varieties, resistant to cryptogamic diseases and adapted to drought. This study is evaluating the oenological potential of 34 modalities of red grapes, focusing on describing color and anthocyanin pigments. The color, the oenological parameters and the berries and wine anthocyanin composition have been studied. Obtained data clearly demonstrates that the anthocyanin composition of grape berries is not linked to the wine composition. Thus, it is necessary to also evaluate the wine characteristics (and not to only focus on grapes) regarding the selection of interesting varieties for vinification. Anthocyanins extraction during alcoholic fermentation appears to be complex and depends on anthocyanin structure. Those phenomena will need further investigation to understand mechanisms governing the extraction of quality markers (polyphenols and aromas) during alcoholic fermentation in red wine conditions. Such results will help to anticipate the wine profile from news varieties.

Publication of the 3rd edition of the OIV ampelographic descriptors

Ampelography is aimed at describing the vine according to several characteristics, such as morphology, agronomic aptitudes, technological potential, and genetics. The description of varieties and species of vitis has long been the subject of numerous scientific and technical studies by eminent specialists for a long time, which have led the OIV to publish in 1983 the “descriptor list for grape varieties and vitis species”, a milestone among the OIV worldwide recognised codes.

Biological control of the vineyard: new microbiological findings from CREA-VE

According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), 75.866 km2 of the world is dedicated to grape cultivation. About 71.0% of the world’s grape production is destined for winemaking, 27.0% for consumption as fresh fruit and 2.0% as raisin. Grape production is mainly hindered by fungal infections, that can develop both in field and post-harvest.

Sustainability as system innovation: sustainability as system innovation: a returnable system for glass wine bottles

Introduction increasing sustainability is essential and a societal challenge, requiring fundamental changes in behaviour and attitudes. This applies to both producers and consumers. For the wine industry in particular, such a change is a major challenge. An eip-agri research project is evaluating the introduction of a returnable glass system in the german wine industry as a key solution for increasing sustainability. Given the need for change associated with a returnable system, the project is theoretically grounded in systems innovation, as this approach provides solutions for complex, transformative change.

Agri-photovoltaics: first experience above Riesling vines

Agri-photovoltaics (apv) describes the dual use of an agricultural area for food production and solar power generation. There are already a number of systems in operation around the world with various crops and under a wide range of different set-ups. In large parts, they still allow mechanical cultivation and other positive side effects of an APV system were observed in addition to the increase in utilization in the form of electricity and food: effects on the water balance and passive protection against extreme weather events.

Analysing consumers’ decision-making process for non-alcoholic spirit drinks and dehalcolized aromatized wines

In recent years, the consumption of alcoholic beverages is changing, driven by evolving consumer preferences and societal trends, including a wave of health consciousness. Among these changes, the emergence and proliferation of nolo (no alcohol/low alcohol) alcoholic beverages have gained significant attention within the industry. Nolo alcohol beverages are produced to emulate the appearance, aroma, and taste of alcoholic beverages, potentially facilitating a sense of social integration when consuming a product that closely resembles alcohol.
