Discover the winner of the 2024 OENO One Young Scientist Award

OENO One, published in Open Access by the International Viticulture and Enology Society (IVES), is a journal dedicated to advancing research in the fields of viticulture and enology. We greatly value the contributions of young scientists and researchers, and the “OENO One Young Scientist Award” is a testament to our commitment to supporting the future leaders in these fields. The objectives of the “OENO One Young Scientist Award” are to recognize and encourage outstanding research contributions from young scientists in viticulture and enology. This year, the award goes to Marine Morel, for the article “The role of rootstock and its genetic background in plant mineral status: the relationship between petiole analyses and deficiency symptoms (published in April, 2024).

👏 She will receive 2000 euros and the opportunity to participate in the upcoming IVES Science Meeting, where she’ll present her research.

🍇 What is this article about?

M: In the article, scion, rootstock, and their interactions had a significant influence on petiole mineral content and explained the same proportion of phenotypic variance for most mineral elements. The rootstock effect was higher than the scion effect on the petiole concentration of a large majority of mineral elements. The joint evaluation of mineral status and deficiency symptoms highlights the diversity of rootstock-induced responses, suggesting a new rootstock classification to help growers optimize plant nutrition and fertilizer management.

🖊️ Why did you choose OENO One to publish your work?

M: The journal is in Open Access, which emphasizes transparency and reproducibility, allowing research to be scrutinized and validated by a wider audience. Moreover, research findings can be quickly disseminated and read by the global scientific community, accelerating innovation and collaboration. This transfer of cutting-edge research from scientists to professionals to address the challenges facing our industry is something that appeals to me deeply. When the results were announced, I felt an overwhelming sense of excitement and gratitude. It’s an incredible honor to be recognized, and I’m truly thankful to everyone who supported me along the way. This recognition not only validates the hard work I’ve put into my research but also motivates me to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in my field.

👀 What are you most looking forward to as part of your participation in the next IVES meeting?

M: I am looking forward to the opportunity to contribute to the IVES network, to engage with other experts, share insights, and present my research at the IVES Science Meeting 2025 to help advance the wine-growing sector. I’m also very excited to attend technical visits to wineries and discover the richness and diversity of Bordeaux’s vineyards. The IVES network represents a unique convergence of expertise and innovation, and I am excited by the prospect of contributing to its mission at the upcoming meeting.

🌏 Why is it important to you to make research widely accessible?

M: As a young researcher, I firmly believe in making knowledge widely accessible. That’s why I submitted my article to OENO One, a journal that perfectly aligns with my values thanks to its Open Access model, enabling wide dissemination within the scientific community and beyond!
