A century of OIV publications and archives: a world heritage of exceptional universal value for vine and wine sciences and techniques

Abstract

In 2004, at its general assembly, the oiv adopted the transfer of its scientific and technical heritage from the office to the international organisation of vine and wine. Unesco defines heritage as “our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations.”  In a constantly evolving wine sector, continually developing thanks to scientific, technical, legal and technological advances, the heritage of the oiv is of fundamental importance to the progress and development of the sector. By understanding the past in depth, the sector is better prepared to face the challenges of the future.  This article aims to highlight the importance of the scientific and technical heritage assembled and produced by the OIV, particularly all the resolutions adopted since its creation. With the OIV’s centenary approaching, it is essential, in order to inform the present and consider the future of the world wine sector, to examine this heritage, some of which has now been digitised. At present, 690 OIV bulletins and 14 414 articles are catalogues and available. The resolutions adopted by the OIV, the publications in the bulletin, the body of word assembled over the last 100 years by the organisation and its archives all testify to a rich past that it seems essential to reappropriate. By reading these documents, users can discover essential parts of the world history of the sector, and understand the legal, technical, scientific, and commercial developments that vine, and wine and other wine products have known in the member countries of the organisation since it was founded. This knowledge is also essential to the study of the interrelationships between wine-producing and/or wine-consuming countries throughout the world during the twentieth century. Twenty years after the renaissance of the organisation and a century after the founding of the office international du vin in 1924, it is appropriate to consider the transmission of this heritage. From the tacit acceptance of the estate’s assets to liquidation with the benefit of all the assets, the organisation, as universal legatee, is able to make the most of an exceptional world heritage of vine and wine science and techniques.

Evaluation of intravarietal variability and selection for tolerance to downy mildew: the case of Antão Vaz variety in Portugal

Antão Vaz is a Portuguese white grapevine variety grown mainly in the wine-growing regions of Southern Portugal, particularly in the Alentejo, Lisbon and Setúbal peninsula regions. It is a very vigorous and productive variety, giving the wines a strong identity. It needs heat and sunlight and prefers deep and dry soils, which makes it tolerant to scald caused by the high summer temperatures of Southern Portugal. However, this variety is very susceptible to downy mildew, caused by plasmopara viticola, a very destructive disease in years with rainy springs.

Genetic traceability of the varietal origin of wines: a robust application for must and wines during alcoholic fermentation

Industry and regulatory agencies have developed regulations to ensure authenticity and compliance with wine composition limits. However, this can be truncated by the absence of simple and robust analytical methodologies, uninfluenced by the environment, different oenological techniques and cultural practices. Genetic fingerprinting is the most powerful tool for unequivocal varietal identification; it is not affected by the environment or agronomic practices; however, its usefulness in musts and wines has been controversial and there is currently no routine certification of varietal origin based on DNA analysis.

Impact of yeast strains on wine profiles of nine PIWIs: focus on volatile thiols

Disease resistant grapevine varieties (PIWI) are increasingly important for sustainable wine production, yet the impact of different yeasts on their wine profiles remains poorly studied. In this study, nine white interspecies varieties (i.e., caladris blanc, fleurtai, hibernal, johanniter, muscaris, sauvignon kretos, soreli, souvignier gris, and voltis) grown at the faculty of agriculture, university of Zagreb (Croatia) were vinified with three different saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts (control strain, zymaflore x5, and zymaflore xarom).

Critical characteristics of activated carbons for efficient removal of Ochratoxin A (OTA) from wine

OTA occurrence in wine is well-documented, with higher levels typically found in red (< 0.01-7.63 μg/l), followed by rose (0.01-2.40 μg/l) and white wine (<0.01-1.72 μg/l). Incidence rates are nOTAble, with studies showing OTA present in 53% of 521 red wines, 69% of 98 rose, and 61% of 301 white wines analysed. In europe, wine is estimated to be the second source of OTA intake after cereals. Since 2006, the maximum allowable limit for OTA in wine is 2 μg/l, according to regulation (ec) no. 1881/2006.

For a phenomenology of terroir. A consumers’ perspective

This study investigates the notion of terroir by applying a phenomenological approach, focusing on the subjective experience of consumers. We will consider how terroir is described by consumers in order to gauge their subjective viewpoint and understand their way of describing and defining this spatiality.
