Un Système d’Informations à Références Spatiales sur le Vignoble. Un outil performant d’aide aux recherches sur la caractérisation des terroirs viticoles

Abstract

The “Terroirs d’Anjou” project led by the Agronomy sector of the Vine and Wine Research Unit of the INRA center in Angers aims to characterize the viticultural terroirs in a study area which includes 29 municipalities in the Maine et Loire and cuts across the Anjou, Coteaux du layon and Coteaux de l’Aubance appellation areas.

The research methodology on viticultural terroirs developed by UVV revolves around two main themes:
– A characterization of terroirs in the field which consists of collecting information relating to the physical components of the environment. Observations on geology, soils and landscapes thus form the basis of the study. This step is similar to a cartographic survey
– A survey conducted among winegrowers in each of the 29 municipalities. This survey is intended to integrate human factors within the study, and to study the possibilities of use as an experimental tool for highlighting the terroir effect. The questionnaire focuses on the behavior of the vine, winemaking, knowledge and empirical management of the terroirs by the winegrower.

This study therefore entails a large volume of information which must be managed in an optimal way to facilitate their processing, while preserving their particular character of localized data. Indeed, there is no direct relationship allowing to associate the data of the investigation on the one hand with those of the characterization on the other hand. The only relationship existing between these two levels of information is of the spatial superposition type. To use it and thus cross the two types of information, it is necessary to manage the associated geographical objects.

Effect of culture and familiarity on wine perception: a study with spanish and british wine experts

Wine perception results from the interaction between the wine and its intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics and the experience [1], background and beliefs of the consumer [2,3]. Among all of the factors affecting wine perception, in this study we focused on culture and cognitive processes, working under the hypothesis that higher familiarity with wines would induce higher perceived quality. Furthermore, we hypothesised that culture would influence the verbalisation of wine properties associated with the different experiences of consumers from different cultures.

Monitoring grapevine water status using Landsat 8 images: a two-year case study in a Merlot vineyard

Viticulture needs for spatial and temporal information are increasing to improve vineyard management, especially concerning water efficiency. Remote sensing, particularly from satellites, can be a powerful tool to assess vineyard characteristics such as vigor or water status in space-time. In this study, we use Landsat 8, an American Earth observation satellite with six bands from the visible (VIS) to the Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) domains with 30m spatial resolution and two thermal bands with 100m spatial resolution.

Occurrence of methyl salicylate in lugana wines: aroma impact and biogenesis

AIM Methyl salicylate (MeSA) has been reported as a potentially impactful compound in Verdicchio wines produced in central Italy. Lugana is another white wine produced in the north-east of Italy from a grape locally known as Trebbiano di Soave, sharing a very similar genetic background with Verdicchio. The aims of this study were evaluating MeSA occurrence in Lugana, assessing its aroma impact on white wines aroma and elucidating its biogenesis during vinification. METHODS Fifteen Lugana wines were analysed for methyl salycilate content in comparison with Verdicchio, Pinot grigio and Garganega wines. MeSA impact on white wine aroma was studied by means of triangular test, adding MeSA at different concentrations. Possible routes of MeSA formation by yeast were investigated by means of a high throughput assay in which S. cerevisiae cells were put in contact with precursor such as salicylic acid (esterification) or glycosidic extracts (glycosidase). Sub-fractions of Lugana glycosidic extracts were also obtained by HPLC fractionation, allowing further evaluation of precursors role.

A GIS Analysis of New Zealand Terroir

This paper summarises a national survey of the geological setting of vineyards in New Zealand. We also provide an overview of climate, slope, aspect and varietals planted in New Zealand vineyards as a whole and for some individual regions.

The start of Croatian grapevine breeding program

Modern viticulture in Croatia and the world is mainly based on the grapevine varieties susceptible to various diseases and pests, which leads to unsustainable use of large amounts of pesticides. The sustainable development of viticulture in the future will only be possible by increasing the resistance of the grapevine through the development of new resistant varieties. Breeding programs have been launched in the leading wine-growing countries with the aim of developing resistant varieties possessing high quality level. Coratia is rich in in native grapevine varieties that are the basis of wine production, and are not included in the breeding programs of other countries.
