Grape ripening timing as a base for viticultural zoning: an agro-ecological approach

Abstract

Due to the central role of the ripening timing in the evaluation of the varietal response to the environmental resources, a method to manage maturation curves has been developed. The method produces an index of veraison precocity and overcomes several methodological problems, like the visual evaluation of the veraison point and the multi-annual and multi-varieties data processing. It is based on a statistical and mathematical processing of the sugar ripening curves. The index resulted satisfactory correlated with flowering time and sugar level at vintage, it allowed to study the effects of environmental resources on the timing of ripening and to classify the vineyards, and the relative land units, into homogeneous groups for what concerns precocity of veraison. For these reasons it demonstrated to be useful for zoning projects.

The role of rootstock and its genetic background in plant mineral status

In this video recording of the IVES science meeting 2025, Marine Morel (EGFV, Univ. Bordeaux, Bordeaux Sciences Agro, INRAE, ISVV, Villenave-d’Ornon, France) speaks about the role of rootstock and its genetic background in plant mineral status. This presentation is based on an original article accessible for free on OENO One.

VOLATILE, PHENOLIC AND COLORIMETRIC CHARACTERIZATION OF THREE DIFFERENT LAMBRUSCO APPELLATIONS

Lambrusco is a commercially successful sparkling red and rosé wine. With 13.06 million litres sold in 2021 was the second best-selling Italian wine after Chianti. According to National Catalogue of Vine Varieties there are thirteen Lambrusco Varieties with which to date are produced seven PDO wines. Among these, “Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce”, “Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro” and “Lambrusco di Sorbara” are the only ones that can be considered mono-varietal appellations, all located in Modena area. The PDOs contemplate the possibility of producing wines by secondary fermentation either in tank (Charmat method), or in bottle (Classico method). Sur lie is a third method commonly employed for Lambrusco, similar to the Classico method, from which differs for the absence of disgorgement.

Sardinia terroir and Cannonau: a zoning approach to discover an ancient tradition

Cannonau variety is historically grown in a large Sardinia area (Jerzu district) and the vineyards are planted both in the plane and in the sloped hills reaching also 650 m of altitude a.s.l. Thus, in order to discover how climate, soil diversity and growing traditions could account for differences in grape and wine quality, this trial was carried out.

Water relations of woody perennial plant species

Field irrigation experiments were performed on young « Nonpareil » almond trees, mature « Bartlett » pear trees and mature « Pinot Noir » grapevines, to determine the relation of a number of alternative measures of plant water status (predawn and midday stem and leaf water potential), to a number of indices of plant physiological activity (leaf conductance, vegetative growth and fruit growth and composition).
