Application of viticulture zoning in Istria (Croatia) as important element for valorization of all territory resources (product, environment, tourism and others)

Abstract

Un projet touristique innovant est en cours dans la zone historique croate d’Istrie Centrale, autour de la magnifique ville de Motovun. L’approche méthodologique repose sur le concept de «Système Productif-Global du Territoire» et s’appuie tout particulièrement sur celui de « Zonage Vitivinicole ». Elle tient compte de toutes les facettes, définies dans celui de « Grand Zonage » (Cargnello G., 1999). L’une des composantes fondamentales dans ce zonage vitivinicole est la prise en considération du Teran, variété intéressante autochtone historique, qui produit un vin rouge très typique et très lié au milieu. Dans ce programme de zonage vitivinicole, ce vin a été « restauré » à travers une sélection clona le appropriée et l’application en vignoble et en cave de techniques et technologies d’innovation, en tenant compte bien évidemment du produit, du consommateur et du producteur. Dans ce zonage vitivinicole, on a pris en considération par ailleurs les lieux, les dispositions foncières, l’orientation des rangs, les strµctures portantes (hauteurs, matériels, etc.), les systèmes de conduite, les systèmes de taille, la gestion de la végétation, de la production et de la vendange, les structures de transformation et de mise en bouteilles, ainsi que des aspects de communication et de marketing, et encore les structures pour la restauration et pour l’hébergement des touristes.

For construction of one innovative tourist project, was taken the historie zone of central Istria, the city of Motovun, with a rich agriculture and other territory resources. The project was done according facts of Global productive system of territory, with special accent to application of Global productive system of viticulture territory, as previously described Cargnello (1999) in the works about “grande” zoning. One very important component in the valorization process of Motovun city is certainly vine variety named Teran. Variety Teran done the red, hard vine, very special for agro-climatic condition of Motovun area. In this research was done the “reconstruction” of this historie variety, with aim to change in viticulture and vine technology, taken all specificity of tourist market and producer skills. For needs of zoning investigation was taken all specific factors of Motovun area, like: characteristic of soil, the vineyards surfaces, training form, yield and other. The special accent was done to marketing of product, in the chain grape-cellar-win-bottle-consumer. Like a specific consumer in this zone, exist the seasonal tourist market.

Mobilizing endogenous transposable elements for grapevine improvement: a genomic and epigenomic approach in New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc

Efforts to improve the New Zealand wine industry’s climate resilience and sustainability through grapevine improvement are limited by germplasm availability and a reliance on Sauvignon Blanc exports. To address this, we are working to generate a population of 12,000 individuals with unique genetic traits, from which to select future clones for major export varieties. Sauvignon Blanc plantlets are being regenerated from embryogenic callus, using an approach designed to mobilise endogenous transposable elements as mutagens.

Underpinning terroir with data: rethinking the zoning paradigm

Agriculture, natural resource management and the production and sale of products such as wine are increasingly data-driven activities. Thus, the use of remote and proximal crop and soil sensors to aid management decisions is becoming commonplace and ‘Agtech’ is proliferating commercially; mapping, underpinned by geographical information systems and complex methods of spatial analysis, is widely used. Likewise, the chemical and sensory analysis of wines draws on multivariate statistics; the efficient winery intake of grapes, subsequent production of wines and their delivery to markets relies on logistics; whilst the sales and marketing of wines is increasingly driven by artificial intelligence linked to the recorded purchasing behaviour of consumers. In brief, there is data everywhere!

Opinions will vary on whether these developments are a good thing. Those concerned with the ‘mystique’ of wine, or the historical aspects of terroir and its preservation, may find them confronting. In contrast, they offer an opportunity to those interested in the biophysical elements of terroir, and efforts aimed at better understanding how these impact on vineyard performance and the sensory attributes of resultant wines. At the previous Terroir Congress, we demonstrated the potential of analytical methods used at the within-vineyard scale in the development of Precision Viticulture, in contributing to a quantitative understanding of regional terroir. For this conference, we take this approach forward with examples from contrasting locations in both the northern and southern hemispheres. We show how, by focussing on the vineyards within winegrowing regions, as opposed to all of the land within those regions, we might move towards a more robust terroir zoning than one derived from a mixture of history, thematic mapping, heuristics and the whims of marketers. Aside from providing improved understanding by underpinning terroir with data, such methods should also promote improved management of the entire wine value chain.

Preliminary studies of zoning applications in Goriška Brda (Collio) winegrowing region, Slovenia

Goriška Brda est la région viticole située le plus à l’ouest de la Slovénie, attenante au Collio d’Italie. Goriška Brda (2020 ha de vignobles) a une longue tradition d’élevage viticole. La proximité de la mer Adriatique (Golfe de Trieste) au sud-ouest et des Alpes Juliennes au nord contribue à un climat caractéristique et unique qui influe sur la croissance et la fertilité de la vigne. La constitution des sols, un climat typique et un relief mouvementé provoquent des différences dans la production du raisin, sa quantité et sa qualité. L’utilisation du zonage ou du microzonage permettraient d’atténuer les influences des facteurs climatiques et du sol sur la production de la vigne ou d’en profiter. Pour évaluer la signification des différents facteurs, nous avons résumé et réuni les modèles de différents auteurs.

Characterisation of berry shrivel in Vitis vinifera L. Cultivars in the Stellenbosch wine region

Late season dehydration, bunch stem necrosis, sugar accumulation disorder and sunburn are various types of berry shrivel occurring in vineyards. The incidence of these types of shrivel, and the degree to which it occur are influenced by various factors in the vineyard. These factors include the presence of pests and diseases in the vineyard, genetic traits expressed in certain cultivars, as
well as climatic and environmental factors. The occurrence of berry shrivel in the vineyard could negatively impact the quality and quantity of the fruit produced.

Brettanomyces bruxellensis and off-odours: genetic and proteomic approaches to unravel the molecular mechanism of ethyl-phenols production

Brettanomyces/Dekkera yeasts in wine are able to produce various spoilage compounds that are, at high concentration, detrimental to wine quality. The principal spoiler compounds associated with Brettanomyces spp. are vinyl and ethyl-phenols that are responsible for off- odours described as “animal”, “medicinal”, “sweaty leather”, “barnyard”, “spicy” and “clove-like”.
