Description of the effect of the practical management in the characterization of « terroir effect »

The characterization of « the soil effect » in vine growing is often limited to the description of the physical components of the terroir. Many works were done in this direction and corresponded to geological, pedological or agronomical approaches. However, if the physical environment influences the vine and its grapes, its effect becomes limited at the scale of exploitation. Thus, it could be important to consider how the viticulturist « translated » the potential.

Estimation of plant hydraulics of grapevine in various «terroirs» in the Canton of Vaud (Switzerland)

The study of the physiological behaviour of the grapevine (cv. Chasselas), and of plant hydraulics in particular, was conducted on various « terroirs » in the Canton of Vaud (Switzerland) between 2001 and 2003 by Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil ACW, in collaboration with the firm I. Letessier (SIGALES) in Grenoble and the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (EPFL). An evaluation of the vine plant hydraulics was made by means of physiological indicators (leaf and stem water potentials, transpiration and leaf stomatal conductance, carbon isotope discrimination and a model of transpirable soil water), in relation to estimations of the soil water reservoir and climatic factors.

Integration of wine cultivation history for characterizing the terroirs of Côte d’Or (Burgundy, France)

Les aires d’appellations de la Côte d’Or résultent d’une sélection humaine empirique, historique et évolutive en adéquation avec les facteurs naturels. Afin de comprendre quels facteurs naturels et humains agissent sur le caractère et l’évolution des terroirs des Côtes de Nuits et de Beaune, une méthodologie de recherche a été développée. Elle s’articule autour de deux axes, la caractérisation physique des lieux-dits viticoles et l’historicité de la qualité de ces lieux-dits. Le travail avec un S.I.G permet d’étudier l’évolution spatiale et temporelle de la qualité.

Sardinia terroir and Cannonau: a zoning approach to discover an ancient tradition

Cannonau variety is historically grown in a large Sardinia area (Jerzu district) and the vineyards are planted both in the plane and in the sloped hills reaching also 650 m of altitude a.s.l. Thus, in order to discover how climate, soil diversity and growing traditions could account for differences in grape and wine quality, this trial was carried out.

A climatic characterisation of the sub-Appellations in the Niagara Peninsula wine region

This study used climatic and topographic data to characterize the sub-appellations that have been recently delineated in the Niagara Peninsula viticulture area in order to assess their potential for ripening early to late season Vitis vinifera varieties. No major differences were found in the ripening-period mean temperatures, but major differences in the diurnal temperature ranges were observed.

Viticultural Climatic Zoning and Digital Mapping of Rio Grande do Sul – Brazil, using Indices of the Géoviticulture MCC System

The State Rio Grande do Sul is the main producer of Brazilian fine wines, with four viticultural regions. The objective is the characterization of the viticultural climatic potential of the State (total surface of 281.749 km2). The methodology use the Géoviticulture Multicriteria Climatic Classification System (Géoviticulture MCC System), based on three climatic indices – Dryness Index (DI), Heliotermal Index (HI) and Cool Night Index (CI).

Effect of certain climatic variables on the phenolic and aromatic composition of two red grape varieties (Merlot and Cabernet-Sauvignon) grown in the Mancha region (Spain)

Between 2002 and 2004 we studied the behaviour of two red grape varieties – Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon – within the scope of an experimental protocol encompassing 14 plots, 7 of which had not been cultivated, situated in geographically distant locations representing different terroirs of Castilla-La Mancha.

Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) is one of the most remarkable Hungarian red wines on inland and foreign markets as well. From the end of the 70’s the quality of Egri Bikavér was decreasing continually due to mass production. The concept of production of quality wines became general in the mid 90’s again and it resulted in a new Origin Control System, for the first time that of Egri Bikavér in Hungary.

Zoning of the Veneto region areas with Denomination of origin

To characterize in depth the enological productions according to the origin territories and to provide modern tools for the qualitative raising of the assorted typologies of wine produced, Veneto Agricoltura (the regional agency for the agriculture, forestry and food industry development), the Regional Government of Veneto (north-eastern Italy) and various Consortia of Producers have undertaken since 2002 a systematic classification of the viticultural territories by agro-ecological zoning to achieve a strategic project aimed to set Veneto as the first Italian region to have completed in a systematic and scientifically rigorous way the zoning of most of its Denomination of Origin areas.
