In Franconia, the northern part of Bavaria in Germany, climate change, visible in earlier bud break, advanced flowering and earlier grape maturity, leads to a decrease of traditionally cultivated early ripening aromatic white wine varieties as Mueller-Thurgau (30 % of the wine growing area) and Bacchus (12 %). With the predicted rise of temperature in all European wine regions the conditions for white wine grape varieties will decline and the grapes themselves will lose a part of their aromatic and fruity expression. Variety change towards the cultivation of later ripening white wine varieties is a very expensive and long-term process, and must be accompanied by special marketing efforts.

Climate variability and its effects in the Penedès vineyard region (NE Spain)
This study present a detailed analysis of the rainfall and temperature changes in the Penedès region in the period 1995/ 96 – 2008/09, in comparison with the trends observed during the last 50 years, and its implications on phenology and yield.
The impact of global warming on Ontario’s icewine industry
Ontario’s wine regions lie at the climatic margins of commercial viticulture owing to their cold winters and short cool growing season. The gradual warming of northern latitudes projected under a human-induced climate change scenario could bring mixed benefits to these wine regions.
Tools for terroir classification for the grape variety Kékfrankos
A 3-year study was carried out in order to evaluate the ecophysiology, yield and quality characteristics of Vitis vinifera L. cv. Kékfrankos (syn. Limberger) at Eger-Nagyeged hill (steep slope) and at Eger-Kőlyuktető (flat) vineyard sites located in the Eger wine region, Hungary.
Identifying research opportunities at Douro Demarcated Region
The Douro Demarcated Region, in Northern Portugal, offers outstanding wines with unique characteristics. Due to the today’s globalized marketplace, local producers often need to further develop their cultivation techniques to remain competitive. The Association of Viticultural Development in the Douro Valley (ADVID) works as a unit of experimentation, offering services and training to meet the demands of the Douro’s vitiviniculturists.
Using open source software in viticultural research
Many high quality Open Source scientific applications have been available for a long time. Some of them have proved to be particularly useful for carrying out the usual activities involved in viticultural research projects, such as statistical analyses (including spatial analyses), GIS work, database management (possibly integrated with statistical and spatial analysis) and even “low-level” often highly time-consuming activities (e.g. repetitive task on text files).
Development of a GRASS-GIS application for the characterization of vineyards in the province of Trento
The physical factors that influence the grape ripening include elevation, slope, aspect, potential global radiation, sun hours and soil type of the vineyards.
Use of hyperspectral data for assessing vineyard biophysical and quality parameters in northern Italy
A total of 39 study sites from 11 commercial vineyards located in two traditional growing areas of Northern Italy were identified for airborne hyperspectral acquisition in summer 2009 with the Aisa-EAGLE Airborne Hyperspectral Imaging Sensor.
A multivariate clustering approach for a gis based territorial characterization of the montepulciano d’abruzzo DOCG “Colline Teramane”
The aim of the project was to characterize the Premium Denomination of Guaranteed Origin (DOCG) “Colline Teramane” wine-growing region and to delineate and define homogeneous zones (terroir units) within it, by applying a multivariate clustering approach combined with geomatics.
Validation of phenological models for grapevine in the Veneto region
In this study we have compared the predictive ability of two phenological models: a traditional Thermal Time (TT) and a version of the more recently develop Unified Model (UM).
Grape variety identification and detection of terroir effects from satellite images
Satellite images are used to determine the reflectance dependency to wavelength in different grape varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay). The terroir influence is investigated through study of vineyards in France, Brazil and Chile.
In the French AOCs, the production area of the raw material can be subject to plot delimitation based on criteria of physical environment and use. On the other hand, many environmental zonings are developing and the AOCs are called upon include provisions relating to these concerns. Hedges, through their effects on local changes in the regional climate and on functional biodiversity, can impact the functioning of vines and orchards. It is for this reason that their consideration as a delimitation criterion is envisaged.
Design of an indicator of vine vigor potential conferred by soil (vipos), using a fuzzy expert system
Winegrowers must adapt more and more their viticultural practices in order to evolve toward a sustainable viticulture, to be competitive and to improve both the production methods and the quality and typicalness of wines. In this context, ‘Terroir’ studies in Loire Valley vineyards have allowed to build decision aid maps that can be used directly by growers to adjust their practices.
