Following the 2008-2009 reform of the European Union’s common market organisation in wine all protected designations of origin and geographical indications were imposed to prepare a product specification that described the conditions of their use. In this paper, we describe this process and the Hungarian system of geographical indications.

In France, one of INAO missions is to delimit the production area of the « Appellations d’origine contrôlées » (AOC). For wine AOC, the delimitation of plots allows for identifying plots of land that respond to technical criteria of the vine location, criteria adapted in every appellation. Some old delimitations AOC are not in adequacy with their territory. Indeed, in spite the existence of a politic aiming to protect production areas AOC, urbanization, road infrastructure or quarries occupy surfaces classified in AOC today.

Eleven wine-growing sites are now on the UNESCO World Heritage List as Cultural Landscapes. If the viticultural character of these sites constitutes the main argument for the demonstration of their heritage value, the terroir and its biophysical and environmental characteristics tend however to appear in a minor mode compared to the aesthetic and cultural dimensions.
