Viticultural Climatic Zoning and Digital Mapping of Rio Grande do Sul – Brazil, using Indices of the Géoviticulture MCC System

The State Rio Grande do Sul is the main producer of Brazilian fine wines, with four viticultural regions. The objective is the characterization of the viticultural climatic potential of the State (total surface of 281.749 km2). The methodology use the Géoviticulture Multicriteria Climatic Classification System (Géoviticulture MCC System), based on three climatic indices – Dryness Index (DI), Heliotermal Index (HI) and Cool Night Index (CI).

Effect of certain climatic variables on the phenolic and aromatic composition of two red grape varieties (Merlot and Cabernet-Sauvignon) grown in the Mancha region (Spain)

Between 2002 and 2004 we studied the behaviour of two red grape varieties – Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon – within the scope of an experimental protocol encompassing 14 plots, 7 of which had not been cultivated, situated in geographically distant locations representing different terroirs of Castilla-La Mancha.

Vine-growing zoning of the municipal territories of Ronda and Arriate (Malaga, Spain), « Sierras de Málaga » registered appellation of origin mark

The aim of this communication is the study of the Ronda and Arriate municipal territories environment in order to define and to establish the main physical factors in relation to vine-growing land use. The vine-growing zoning proposed is based on geopedological and climatic features.

Terroir aspects in development of quality of Egri bikavér

Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) is one of the most remarkable Hungarian red wines on inland and foreign markets as well. From the end of the 70’s the quality of Egri Bikavér was decreasing continually due to mass production. The concept of production of quality wines became general in the mid 90’s again and it resulted in a new Origin Control System, for the first time that of Egri Bikavér in Hungary.

Zoning of the Veneto region areas with Denomination of origin

To characterize in depth the enological productions according to the origin territories and to provide modern tools for the qualitative raising of the assorted typologies of wine produced, Veneto Agricoltura (the regional agency for the agriculture, forestry and food industry development), the Regional Government of Veneto (north-eastern Italy) and various Consortia of Producers have undertaken since 2002 a systematic classification of the viticultural territories by agro-ecological zoning to achieve a strategic project aimed to set Veneto as the first Italian region to have completed in a systematic and scientifically rigorous way the zoning of most of its Denomination of Origin areas.

New technologies to characterize spatial variability in viticulture

Measurements of parameters spatialy positionned, with on line sensors mounted on classical machinery or airborne imagery is no more a problem in viticulture. In a short time, high resolution data dedicated to the assessment of the vine characteristics, the soil, the harvest, etc. will become a reality.

Sugar loading and phenolic accumulation as affected by ripeness level of Syrah/R99 grapes

Investigation on harvesting period choices for correct interpretation of experimental results

Happens too often in scientific papers to find the same harvesting period of a cultivar, although the used treatment influence a maturity curve of investigated thesis.
This inevitably leads to wrong conclusions when comparing the treatment effects, since obtained on maturity stages more or less far from those technologically correct.

Classification of the wine-growing environment of Central Mancha (Spain). First works

This paper describes a zoning study performed on a vast territory of around 86,500 hectares, situated in the countryside area of La Mancha Central (Castilla-La Mancha). The aim of the study was to classify the environment according to a small number of ecological criteria, establish the relevant territorial units and generate thematic maps with the different levels of criteria employed and synthetic maps by crossing these criteria.

The impact of differences in soil texture within a vineyard on vine development and wine quality

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc has rapidly gained an international reputation for style and quality. The extent to which this can be attributed to the climate, soils or vineyard management is at present unclear. However, the young alluvial soils of the Wairau Plains are considered to play an important role in determining this unique wine style. Marked changes in soil texture occur on the Wairau Plains over short distances.

Results of late-wurmian to present-day climatic-geological evolution on to spatial variability of pedologic-geological characters of the AOC Gaillac terroirs (Tarn, Midi-Pyrénées)

The AOC Gaillac area is divided into three main terroirs : « The left bank terraces », « The right bank coteaux » and
« The plateau Cordais ». This division is valid at a regional scale, but it suffers of a number of local-scale exceptions. This spatial variability of the pedologic-geologic characteristics at the plot scale has been derived mainly from the main late-Würmian solifluxion phase occurring at the transition between the peri-glacial climate and the Holocene temperate conditions (13,000-10,000 yrs BP).

Soil or geology? And what’s the difference? Some observations from the New World

Observational historical geology seeks to establish the evolutionary history of the surface of Earth. This approach is applicable not only to bedrock, but to the soft material that lies at the surface, the stuff called soil by most people. The geologic perspective provides a view of this material that is quite different from that of soil science, at least as practiced by many in America.

Viticultural characterisation of soils from triassic period at Beaumes-de-Venise (Côtes du Rhône, France)

Wineries of Beaumes-de-Venise area make their best red wines with grapes from the “Triassic terroir”. This « terroir » is characterized by soils from the Triassic period. These specific soils are complex and quite heterogeneous. They originate from an eventful geological history to keep in mind to understand soils geographical distribution.

Characterization of spatial and temporal soil water status in vineyard by DC resistivity measurements

We performed a DC resistivity monitoring experiment during eight months in 2003. Low, medium and high resolution measurements have been carried out at various locations of a vineyard. General apparent resistivity mapping evidences the spatial variations of the summer drying of the subsurface.

Characterization of vine vigor by ground based NDVI measurements

Many farming operations aim at controlling the leaf area of the vine according to its load. There are several techniques, direct and indirect, of estimate of this leaf area in a specific way, but impossible to implement at great scales. These last years, research in airborne and satellite remote sensing made it possible to show that a multispectral index of vegetation, computed from measurements of reflectances (red and near infrared), the « Normalised Difference Vegetation Index » (NDVI), is well correlated to the « Leaf Area Index » (leaf area per unit of ground) of the vine. Nevertheless these methods of acquisition and processing data are rather constraining and complex.

Vine field monitoring using high resolution remote sensing images: segmentation and characterization of rows of vines

A new framework for the segmentation and characterization of row crops on remote sensing images has been developed and validated for vineyard monitoring. This framework operates on any high-resolution remote sensing images since it is mainly based on geometric information. It aims at obtaining maps describing the variation of a vegetation index such as NDVI along each row of a parcel.

Complementarity of measurements of electric resistivity of soils and ΔC13 of must in studies and valorization of wine terroirs

The correlations between vine water deficit cumulated over the ripening period of grapes, assessed by ΔC13 in must sugar, and the main analytic variables of grapes are significant. As a result ΔC13 is a useful tool in zoning homogeneous areas according to their technological qualities when harvesting.
