In the French AOCs, the production area of the raw material can be subject to plot delimitation based on criteria of physical environment and use. On the other hand, many environmental zonings are developing and the AOCs are called upon include provisions relating to these concerns. Hedges, through their effects on local changes in the regional climate and on functional biodiversity, can impact the functioning of vines and orchards. It is for this reason that their consideration as a delimitation criterion is envisaged.
Design of an indicator of vine vigor potential conferred by soil (vipos), using a fuzzy expert system
Winegrowers must adapt more and more their viticultural practices in order to evolve toward a sustainable viticulture, to be competitive and to improve both the production methods and the quality and typicalness of wines. In this context, ‘Terroir’ studies in Loire Valley vineyards have allowed to build decision aid maps that can be used directly by growers to adjust their practices.
Traceability of agro-alimentary products is very important to certify their origin. This work aimed to characterize wines obtained by the same cultivar (Nero d’Avola and Fiano) – grown in regions with different soil and climate conditions during three vintages (2003-2005) – employing isotopic analyses (NMR and IRMS) and sensory analyses.
The influence of native flora on Argentine white terroir cv. Torrontes Riojano
The main objective of this paper is to establish considerable differences between wines from three wine areas or terroir, made with cv Torrontes Riojano.
Stomatal restrictions to photosynthesis in grapevine cultivars grown in a semiarid environment
Diurnal changes in the leaves of field-grown grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivars Syrah and Tempranillo were followed over summer 2009 with respect to gas exchanges. Net photosynthetic rate (AN) of both cultivars rapidly increased in the morning, decreasing slowly until the late afternoon, when reached the lowest values.
Grape typicity valorization can significantly enhance viticultural sector competitiveness to the extent that contributes to the development of a wine so distinctive and unique. This work leads to the characterization of the grapes through indicators expressing environmental effects.
Isotope composition of wine as indicator of terroir spatial variability
The goal of this work was to determine the spatial variability of terroir using the isotope composition of wine. Carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) stable isotope composition was measured in wines from Tempranillo (Vitis vinifera L.) vineyard, located in Rioja Appellation (Spain). Stable isotope composition, leaf area, vigour, yield components, grape and wine composition were determined in a grid of 85 geo-referenced points, that was drawn across the 5 ha vineyard area
Texas terroir: gis characterization of the texas high plains ava
The Texas High Plains AVA is one of eight officially recognized wine regions in Texas, established in 1993. Six local wineries, including the second-largest in Texas, are supported by approximately 50 vineyards, which are also major suppliers of grapes to Texas wineries outside the region.
Satellite imagery : a tool for large scale vineyard management
Remote sensing, using Near Infra Red wavelength, can characterize within-vineyard variability using vegetation index. Between 2007 and 2009, a study was led on the vineyards of a cooperative winery, in Fitou area (France) aiming at characterizing vineyard oenological potential. A vegetation index, green leaf cover, developed on crops (wheat, rice, corn…) was implemented on vineyards.
Impact of pedoclimatical conditions on the precocity potential of vineyards in the canton of Geneva
Terroir studies are common nowadays but few have used precise pedoclimatic measures in order to evaluate the precocity potential. The objectives of this work were (i) to assess the effect of main terroir parameters (soil, climate and topography) influencing the phenological development of the vine, and (ii) to evaluate a geostatistic approach by using a high number of already existing plots (higher variability) to analyze the terroir parameters’ impact.
Using atmospheric and statistical models to understand local climate and assess spatial temperature variability at a fine scale over the Stellenbosch wine district, South Africa
Atmospheric and statistical models were used to increase understanding of potential climatic impacts, resulting from mesoscale physical processes that cause significant temperature variability for viticulture within the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin district. Hourly temperature values from 16 automatic weather stations and 40 tinytag data loggers located in the vineyards were analysed.
New methods and technologies to describe the environment in terroir studies
The concept of terroir in viticulture deals with the influence of environmental factors on vine behaviour and grape ripening. Recent advances in technology, in particular computer technology, allow a more in-depth study of the environment. Geomorphology can be studied with digital Elevation Models (DEM). Soils can be surveyed with geophysics.
