Use of the soils information system for detailed vineyard soil surveys and as a component of precision viticulture

Vineyard soil surveys can be costly and time consuming. The Soils Information System (SIS) provides a set of tools to do a quick evaluation of soil physical properties in the vineyard. First, a system equipped with GPS and EM38 equipment, provides a very precise DEM and a soil electrical conductivity map. Specific sampling points are located for a tractor-mounted geotechnical probe to make soil physical measurements.

The honeydew moth Cryptoblabes gnidiella is the main problem for the wineries in the Northeast of the Brazil, because it attacks the bunch and reduces the quality of the grapes and the wines. In order to stretch out the bunch to facilitate the penetration of the insecticides, it was used gibberellic acid. Six treatments with different concentrations and different dates of application, and the control were compared.

Free amino acid composition of must from 7 Vitis vinifera L. cv. in Latium (Italy)

Free amino acid concentrations in must of 7 Vitis vinifera cultivars (Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Merlot, Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Cesanese d’Affile, Carmenere) grown in the Latium region (Italy) were monitored from 2003 to 2005. The cultivars were located in a homogeneous soil and climatic zone and with the same training system (Cordon Spur).

H-NMR metabolic profiling of wines from three cultivars, three soil types and two contrasting vintages

Differences in wine flavour proceed primarily from grape quality. Environmental factors determined by the climate, soil and training systems modify many grape and wine quality traits. Metabolic profiling based on proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectra has been proved to be useful to study multifactorial effects of the vine environment on intricate grape quality traits. The capacity of this method to discriminate the environmental effects on wine has to be demonstrated.

Vine plant material: situation and prospect

vine plant material is one of the major factors of terroir. The vine numbers over 1,000 species, of which the main cultivated species, Vitis vinifera, includes some 6,000 varieties. For the last forty years, selection has been carried out on these, mainly through clonal selection. However, today, only 300 varieties present one or more clones. A dozen varieties are considered as international. The extreme requirements of selection, in terms of diseases, provoke the elimination of the majority of selected plants. This approach to selection is not thorough because it focuses mainly on elimination of virosis and phytoplasma diseases.

Influence of edapho-climatic factors on grape quality in Conca de Barberà vineyards (Catalonia, Spain)

Soil and climate of 3 vineyards have been characterised in order to determine their influence on grape quality. These vineyards are located in Conca de Barberà (Catalonia, NE Spain) and belong to Cabernet sauvignon and Grenache noir cultivars. All 3 plots are very close, so only interannual climatic data of the nearest meteorological station have been considered.

Relationship between soil and grapevine variety in the wineyard of Jura: example for the “Trousseau” variety from the “Terroir” of Montigny-Lès-Arsures (France)

Seven plots located in the commune of Montigny-lès-Arsures (Jura, 39), planted with grapevine varieties Trousseau and Savagnin, were chosen for a study of soil pits and a distribution of major and trace chemical elements in soils and wines. It was shown that the mineral matrix of the soil reflects the geological substratum and the sub-surface alteration process, while the organic soil matrix depends on agro-viticultural practices.

Study of the “Charentes terroir” for wine production of Merlot and Sauvignon: method, installation of the experimental device, first results

Cognac vineyard is mainly dedicated to brandy production. Within the vineyard restructuring context, one part is turned over wine varieties for wine production (about 1,500 ha planted from 1999 to 2005). Today, the new wine producers need technical references about qualitative potential of the « Charentes Terroir », varieties and adapted vineyard management.
In order to answer to this professional request, an observatory of 18 plots of Merlot and 12 plots of Sauvignon have been laid out since 2003 and 2004 on various kinds of pedoclimate.

Cartography of « Terroir Units » is a Tool to Improve the Ré Island Vineyard Management (France)

A study of « terroirs » was achieved from 2003 to 2005 in the whole vineyard of the Ré island (17, France). Over more than 1,990 ha, a cartography at the 1/10.000 scale, including characterization of climatic, pedological, geological and hydrogeological components of « Basic Terroir Units » (B.T.U.) was made. Also, a survey among wine growers was conducted. All data were treated together in a G.I.S. connected to a data base. 22 kinds of map were built (B.T.U. and components, soil water reserve, vine functioning potentials, varieties, rootstocks, viticultural practices and soil management).

Agronomical assessment of a vine « terroir » map: first results in the « AOC » Minervois region

Minervois is a vine region where the first detailed soil map was begun 30 years ago. In 2003, a new map was drawn plotting the soil-landscape associations. This map distinguishes 8 large soil units based on geology. The widest (called « marnes ») is the most complex : it is made of 57 sub-units, which leads to a high variability of the vine behaviour on this unit.

Enhancement of the terroir

The terroir is today the most important factor of production and development in the wine sector. In a context where the commercial challenge is taking place all over the place, the distinction between traditional and “new” producing countries is not only a geographical, cultural and technical counter position but also, and above all, a legal one. Indeed, the system of standards present in the “old world” (plantation rights, production decrees, yields per hectare, etc.) which may represent, in the short term on the global market, constraints to development and product innovation must become an opportunity. But threats become opportunities, if we work, from the vine to the market, via communication, more on the elements of difference than on those of affinity.
